        from Mark Mountford / Added

Another great project commissioned by Aldeburgh music. All of the shots were done using the Sony NEX-FS100 with the E18-200mm and E16mm lens. It was edited in Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the colour grading and a few other effects added using After Effects CS5.5. OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION Composer Richard Baker and Sound Artist Brian Duffy are both fascinated by games and here collaborate on a new work exploring the hidden voices of electronic toys and toy instruments in combination with a small chamber ensemble. Faster than Sound is a groundbreaking strand of programming that joins the dots between musical genres and digital art forms. Giving artists the rare chance to have time and space to develop new work, Faster than Sound places a strong emphasis on emerging technologies and original ideas. Faster than Sound is produced by Aldeburgh Music, and continues a long tradition at Aldeburgh of giving artists the opportunity to experiment and work in new ways. • Faster than Sound - Star Shaped Biscuit

          from Mark Mountford / Added

This is a follow up to my previous commissioned work with Aldeburgh music. Another fantastic project set in a brilliant location, though it was a pretty tricky shoot with it being perhaps one of the brightest days in history! It was shot over the course of a day by myself. All of the shots were done using the Sony NEX-FS100 with the E18-200mm lens. It was edited in Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the colour grading and a few other effects added using After Effects CS5.5. OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION A woman, Dora, retreats to a northern island to await the final deluge. Perhaps she is the last human to survive environmental apocalypse, though ghosts keep her company. Among Dora's few possessions is a star-shaped biscuit encased in a silver casket... Star-shaped Biscuit is inspired by the writings of the French dandy and author extraordinaire Raymond Roussel, whose star-shaped biscuit was acquired in a Paris flea market by Dora Maar, muse to Picasso. With text and music by the experimental composer, musician and writer David Toop, the performers include some of the finest improvising musicians and is performed in one of Snape Maltings derelict buildings. Cast: Lore Lixenberg, Elaine Mitchener, Jamie McDermott; Musicians: Simon Allen, Martin Allen, Hélène Breschand, Sylvia Hallett, Jan Hendrickse. This was an extremely enjoyable project I was commissioned to do by Aldeburgh music and was shot over the course of a day and a half by myself. All of the shots were done using the Sony NEX-FS100 with the E18-200mm lens. It was edited in Premiere Pro CS5.5 with the colour grading and a few other effects added using After Effects CS5.5. OFFICIAL DESCRIPTION 'I Burn for You' is an atmospheric new music theatre work inspired by Bram Stoker's legendary vampire novel Dracula, created by composer Ian Wilson and stage director Tom Creed. It brings together an astonishing line up of performers including the Hungarian death metal vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Sunn O))), and Void of Voices) -- whose remarkable voice has been described as operatic -- in the vampyric role. He is joined by virtuosic vocal improvisers Phil Minton and Elaine Mitchener and acclaimed musicians including saxophonist Cathal Roche, accordionist Clive Bell and electro-acoustic improviser David Toop. An edited exert from a live performance at Britten Studio, Snape Maltings ~ 29/10/11. Fall Back is a new composition by Roly Porter (Former Vex'd) with multi-instrumentalist Cynthia Millar on Ondes Martenot and Dobro. The piece was created during a week-long 'Faster Than Sound' residency at Snape Maltings concert hall with all source material recorded during that time. Artist Rod Maclachlan conjured up images for the performance using the analogue episcopic projection technique; bright lights reflect off objects and this light is focused by a large lens creating epic, hypnotic moving images of exquisite detail. Items projected included coal, plastic bags and a car headlight. A handmade oil-wheel made using sump engine oil was also used. Many thanks to all at Faster than Sound and Aldeburgh Music.

Documentary film of 'Variable 4', a generative sound installation based on weather patterns, by James Bulley and Daniel Jones. For more information please see: http://www.variable4.org.uk Video footage: Drew Cox (http://drewcox.co.uk) Audio material generated and recorded live from the weather conditions of Snape Maltings, Suffolk during the 24 hour installation of Variable 4 (Faster Than Sound, midday Saturday May 28th - midday Sunday May 29th 2011) Variable 4 is an 8-speaker outdoor sound installation which translates weather conditions into musical patterns in real time. Using meteorological sensors connected to a custom software environment, the weather itself acts as conductor, navigating through a map of 24 specifically-written movements. Every aspect of the piece, from broad harmonic progressions down to individual notes and timbres, is influenced by changes in the environment: wind speed, rainfall, solar radiation, humidity, tropospheric variance, temperature, and more. Linking together the sensor data and scored motifs is an array of algorithmic processes drawn from the natural world, modelling phenomena such as tree growth, swarm theory and evolutionary development. The resultant composition is performed over a 24 hour duration through a field of 8 speakers integrated into the landscape.
