Philadelphia’s first family of Klezmer, 2000 Pew Fellow and percussionist Elaine Hoffman Watts and her daughter trumpeter Susan Watts, co-curated the first half of "Klezmer Voices of Three Generations," the fourth edition of "Noise from the 18th Floor." Elaine’s grandfather, Joseph Hoffman, brought Klezmer music to Philadelphia when he immigrated here in 1904. Her father Jacob taught her how to play the drums. Here, Elaine talks about drumming and reflects on those early years with her father. "Noise from the 18th Floor," an online music program of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, is meant to challenge our notions of music and noise with playlists that represent a range of genres, accompanied by interpretive narratives. Each program in the series is curated by a local music expert and highlights the work of the Center's constituents and grantees, helping to build awareness of our region's cultural vibrancy. To listen to the fourth edition and view other exclusive material, visit the "Noise from the 18th Floor" page at www.pcah.us/noise.
