Susan Crawford, former special assistant to President Obama for science, technology and innovation, and author of Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age, joins Bill to discuss how our government has allowed a few powerful media conglomerates to put profit ahead of the public interest — rigging the rules, raising prices, and stifling competition. As a result, Crawford says, all of us are at the mercy of the biggest business monopoly since Standard Oil in the first Gilded Age a hundred years ago. “The rich are getting gouged, the poor are very often left out, and this means that we’re creating, yet again, two Americas, and deepening inequality through this communications inequality,” Crawford tells Bill.

WINNER: FCC Short Film Competition 2012 - Best Cinematography Originally made as a personal film for my family only, I decided to make it better to submit in a film competition in Malayalam language. A big thanks to my friend and partner Mansoor CK who took the lead and got it completed for the competition and won "Best Cinematography" award with flying colors. English subtitles will be added shortly. BACKSTORY: Inspired by my personal story, this film shares a tiny chapter, a not-so-happy part of my life that documents my typical weekend. With a hectic work schedule and hundreds of jobs to get done, I find myself losing precious moments with my children as they grow up. I am, like thousands of others, a victim of the modern work ethics where multi-tasking is considered a plus and a desirable quality in an individual. While we get a handsome paycheck for displaying such skill at work, we forget what the trade off is... something that is priceless. This rough video chronicles raw moments leading up to the digital television transition on June 12, 2009, and features engineers Joey Gill and James Gott of the NBC affiliate in Paducah, Kentucky. Highlights captured here are the newscast run-ups; Joey's generous tour of the broadcast facilities, with colorful commentary on photos of antenna construction; cracking open beer cans to celebrate; finishing out the analog signal with vintage sign-off footage and the national anthem; me pulling the plug on analog; and hearing what was left after the removal of WPSD's VHF television signal: a Christian FM radio station across the street on an adjacent channel (the voice of God?). Priceless memories from an historic night.

In 1983, 50 corporations controlled a majority of American media. Now that number is six. And Big Media may get even bigger, thanks to the FCC’s consideration of ending a rule preventing companies from owning a newspaper and radio and TV stations in the same big city. Such a move -- which they’ve tried in 2003 and 2007 as well --would give these massive media companies free rein to devour more of the competition, control the public message, and also limit diversity across the media landscape. Bernie Sanders, one of several Senators who have written FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski asking him to suspend the plan, discusses with Bill why Big Media is a threat to democracy, and what citizens can do to fight back. Also on the show, Bill is joined by former Republican Congressman Mickey Edwards, a founding father of modern conservative politics who now fears the movement has abandoned its principles. Edwards explains why both political parties require radical change, and shares his perspective on Grover Norquist and anti-tax pledges. “It’s not conservatism, not rational, not adult," Edwards tells Bill. " It’s a 12-year-old’s kind of thinking.” Edwards chaired the Republican Policy Committee, was a founding trustee of the conservative Heritage Foundation, and served as National Chairman of the American Conservative Union. Finally, in an original essay, Bill Moyers says there's more to Norquist’s unusual pledge than ideology or principle.
