An absolute highlight of the MusicNow weekend was a collaboration between Megafaun, Fight The Big Bull, Bon Iver and Sharon Van Etten called Sounds Of The South, an evening of re-imaginings of the songs recorded by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in his early travels. Here, Justin Vernon burns a solo "Write Me A Few Lines" to cinders to the raucous score beating down on him from all sides. http://musicnow.com http://boniver.org http://fightthebigbull.com http://astorytoldwell.com From Sara Padgett-Heathcott of Hometapes: "Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax’s 1961 release of southern field recordings, Sounds of the South, is an eight-disc extravaganza of delta blues, gospel and southern folk music entrenched in a rich cultural history. Now, almost 50 years after its initial release on Atlantic Records, Sounds of the South has found new life in the hands of Durham trio Megafaun. Joined by the stunning Richmond jazz collective Fight the Big Bull, as well as friends and world-renown talents Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Sharon Van Etten on featured vocals, Megafaun built a team and fostered a collaborative and loving reinterpretation of the sound, structure, lyrics, and spirit of Lomax's classic recordings. The result, originally performed as part of a Duke-commissioned three-night performance at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham last Fall, is a resurrection to behold." Special thanks to Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Meredith Melragon, Sharon Van Etten, Justin Vernon, the brothers Cook, Joltin' Joe Westerlund and all the amazing players.

From 'I Mean To Live Here Still' by David Karsten Daniels & Fight The Big Bull. "The video for 'Epitaph on the World' by David Karsten Daniels & Fight the Big Bull uses imagery from sources as diverse as New Orleans funeral marches, Hungarian carnival and American Indian face painting to bring the musical epic to life. Using themes of death, rebirth and man's place in the natural world, director Kai Hsing has created a narrative with simple yet arresting images that are as ambitious as the song's sprawling sonic palette. Just as every end has a new beginning, the video uses a series of double-sided scenarios to explore these ideas." From the album 'I Mean To Live Here Still' by David Karsten Daniels & Fight The Big Bull. Directed by Mitchell Craft - http://g5ztop.blogspot.com/ 'I Mean To Live Here Still’ is the third FatCat album to bear the name of San Francisco-based artist David Karsten Daniels, although it is an entirely different prospect to his previous releases in many ways. A collaboration with Richmond, Virginia-based 9-piece avant-jazz collective Fight the Big Bull, ‘I Mean To Live Here Still’ is the product of two decidedly individual, but musically (and geographically) distant sets of musicians. http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/release.php?id=316

This is an 8 min jammer. First 3 mins sound like some sort of wandering about town. Then one finds the party. Not sure about the song title on this so I will have to contact Matt White the band leader.

Glows in the Dark is an avant-garde jazz group from Richmond, Virginia. Scott Burton plays guitar and does the composing. This song was written as a re-creation of the film "Winterlight" by Ingmar Bergman. Jason Arce plays saxes, Reggie Pace plays trombone, Cameron Ralston plays bass, and Scott Clark plays the drums. This is from a show we played at Rumors Boutique in our home town. More info on us at: myspace.com/glowsinthedarkmusic
