This was my 2nd project for Sight and Sound Documentary at NYU for Film and Television. In this class, we get into crews of 4 people and do 3-4 projects. This personal project had to incorporate archival and be told through an animate object that had significant meaning to me. Special thanks to my crew and enjoy!

One of the few memories I still recollect from my early childhood days, were the frequent playdates I shared with dolls and wigs, stereo-typically dubbed as ‘girl toys.’ Although I didn’t realize it then, from a young age I was already experimenting with the female gender, especially through the way I used to cling onto a very special purple wig I had, which I often wore. In creating Synthetic, I was able to re-experience my past gender experimentation as well as look at the way media affected these choices. The images flow in a non-linear pattern flashing from my past to present self, as well as shots of the purple wig placed on a perfect mannequin head, vintage commercials, and gender stereotypes in toy stores cutting between. This sometimes puzzling visual narrative reflects my gender confusion as well as the shaky camera and overexposed shots. The title, ‘Synthetic,’ echoes the material of the wig but more importantly relates to how ‘gender stereotypes’ influence many people to become fake and artificial versions of themselves. However, Synthetic contributes to more themes than just boy gender confusion. It looks upon female gender stereotypes as well, as the female mannequin has the perfect, flawless face, something extremely artificial but a thing many women feel the need to strive for.

This project was my third exercise for Sight and Sound Filmmaking with Professor Tanis in Fall 2013. In S&S Film, we have to create 5, silent, black and white films and crew on 15 other projects (*the last project can have sound and color). The assignment had to deal with soft/bounced lighting. None of the sound was recorded on production. For another class, Sound Design, I recorded and edited sound, which is in this uploaded version. Most of the sounds was done with ADR & Foley. The sound edits were made in Spring 2014. There was no dialogue when I originally wrote the script, so all of the voice acting is improvisation. Special thanks to the cast and crew! Enjoy!
