Watch Part II: Sara - vimeo.com/92667092 Watch Part III: Celeste - vimeo.com/86924061 "Gabrielle is an actress. Or at least, she wants to be. She's hungry for a great role - the one that will change her life forever. Sabrina might have the answer Gabrielle has been looking for. But how far will she go in order to lose herself in this new character...and will she like what she finds? Sara's grim discovery, Celeste's lonely secret - this is where all of it begins. And where it will end." Featuring a cast of ten actors, Part l: Gabrielle is a significant new work for DUMBSAINT: an unnerving filmic experience which exemplifies their unconventional and idiosyncratic approach to telling stories through sound and image. The result of up to seventy hours of location shooting and roughly two hundred and fifty hours of editing, Part I: Gabrielle marks a turning point, not only completing the elaborate, fragmented narrative of the Disappearance In A Minor Role series but setting a new technical standard for their film work. Incorporating over twenty minutes of original new music composed specifically for the film, Part I: Gabrielle is both the beginning and end to Disappearance In A Minor Role – answering many of the puzzling questions raised throughout the unfolding film series, while inevitably prompting some new ones. To celebrate the release, all three parts of the Disappearance In A Minor Role series will be available together on cassette tape in strictly limited quantity courtesy of Grimoire Tape Cassette Cvlture, featuring exquisite packaging and the bonus track ‘End Titles’. Purchasers of the 14-track release will also receive a collection of behind-the-scenes photos. Pre-order now to receive opening track ‘Formalities’ as an immediate download. Part l: Gabrielle will be available for download only, August 8 on Bird’s Robe Records.

“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, the Colonel was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice.” So reads the opening line of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. It strikes me one of the most compelling opening lines of any novel. Within its precision of language and visceral intonations one can transgress an entire generation of time and reconcile the imagined searing afternoon heat with the glacial purity of the frozen water, all in one sentence. There is an unambiguous seduction through the incompatible details, challenging our need to somehow apprehend the order, the meaning, the purpose, the story. In much the same way, SERIF is woven together from nearly ninety different film clips, carefully chosen for their narrative value and evocative nature. Seemingly disconnected, the fragments unfold nomadically, creating not a story line, but an axis upon which events accumulate or, more accurately, instigate. The structure intentionally mirrors a zoetrope, flickering constantly and rhythmically while dependent upon a kind of persistence of memory to shape the biographical trajectory of the many bits and pieces. In that sense the video functions very much as a personal memoir, written in cinematic fragments, while focused on the reciprocity between memory and imagination.

Between extras, locations and endless script revisions, he begins to lose track of where the movie ends and his real life begins. Trapped in a surreal maze of actors playing directors and directors doubling as actors, Arthur rediscovers an object from his past, and is drawn back to a place beyond the frame''. The Auteur project has seen DUMBSAINT continue to explore unexpected interactions between sound and image, working with a range of new techniques to tell an experimental narrative that plays with inventive references to the band’s own filmmaking process. Shot entirely by the members of DUMBSAINT, the short film is a surrealist adaptation of the title track, with the enigmatic story unfolding in perfect sync with the music itself. The complete package includes the single, digital download of the short film, six audio remixes and one video remix, with collaborations from some of the band’s peers and favourite experimental Australian artists, including Sydney electronic artist SETEC, Brisbane sound artist EOIN CLEMENTS, Andrew Mortensen of SERIOUS BEAK, Perth drone artist HOUDINI, Brendan Gloag of FACE COMMAND and Brisbane post-rock three-piece ECHOTIDE.
