      • Finnish Glass from the Cor and Sjoukje de Wit collection

For the past forty years, during their trips to Finland, Cor de Wit and his wife Sjoukje collected several hundred pieces of exceptional glass by people such as Alvar and Aino Aalto, Kaj Franck, Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Oiva Toikka and Markku Salo. They purchased the items from the factories, in the designers’ studios and on local markets. They found several pieces in the Netherlands. This video shows how Cor - his wife Sjoukje died three years ago - has surrounded himself at home with his beloved objects. The whole interior is Scandinavian, with lamps by Arne Jacobson, a tea table and stools by Alvar Aalto, Arabia china by Kay Franck and cutlery by Bertel Gardberg. For Cor de Wit, editor of the former magazine Goed Wonen [Good Living], a timeless, functional and organic style is still the ideal. In the de Wit collection, the emphasis is on glass from the ‘fifties, the Golden Years of Finnish design. Mr and Mrs de Wit decided to bequeath this collection to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Cor de Wit himself has now put together a small presentation with a number of industrial products and several unique handmade items. This selection can be seen at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen from 10 March to 5 August 2012.

Hi! We are Polly and Jacopo, a photographer and a designer from Helsinki, Finland. We would like to introduce you to: Iceland, rauður grænn blár (http://igg.me/at/iceland-rgb) In June 2013 our dream to visit Iceland finally came true. Ten days and fourteen film rolls after, we have come back to Helsinki with this idea in our heads: putting together a coffee table book with our photographs of the breathtaking Icelandic landscapes. As we did not want the book to be just a mere collection of images, we thought about involving a selected group of Icelandic poets and writers to help us finding the right words to support our shots. We need your help to bring this beautiful book to life, support us on Indiegogo >> http://igg.me/at/iceland-rgb The writers collaborating with us When we started to think about the concept of the book, we thought it would have been interesting to collaborate with other artists, to inspire them to put into words the emotions developing from our photographs. For several weeks we had been looking for Icelandic poets and writers interested in helping us with the book. It was difficult to find the right people! Eventually we selected five fabulous Icelandic artists: Trausti Dagsson Valur Gunnarsson Silja Hansen Svala Magnea Brynja Huld Óskarsdóttir The title of the book Our book is called "Iceland, rauður grænn blár", in honour of the colours of the Icelandic landscapes: rauður red: volcanoes, lava fields, fumaroles... grænn green: mountains, green fields, farm lands... blár blue: glaciers, rivers, ocean... MaccaNow We have decided to donate a part of what will be raised to a charity, MaccaNow Foundation. Iceland, rauður grænn blár (http://igg.me/at/iceland-rgb) is a precious coffee table book with over 100 photographs of the breathtaking Icelandic landscapes, enhanced by the unique work of five great Icelandic writers. As you already know, we have been working with a selected group of Icelandic poets and writers to help us finding the right words to support our shots. With this video we wanted to showcase one of the precious poems written by Valur Gunnarsson: "Húsið við sjóinn" (A House by the Sea). Valur is a 37 year old writer. He has been writing articles in the Icelandic press for 10 years and was the first editor of Grapevine magazine. His first poetry book, "A Fool for Believeing," won the best newcomer award in Washington DC in 2002. He has also made three albums, including one of Leonard Cohen songs in Icelandic, and written a novel set in Finland. His second novel, The Last Lover, is coming out in Iceland this October. "Húsið við sjóinn" Sólin aldrei skín, hún brennur Áin aldrei flæðir, hún rennur Vindurinn aldrei hvín, hann orgar Og fólkið í húsinu borgar og borgar Vínið aldrei þroskast, það gerjast Árstíðirnar aldrei breytast, þær berjast Dögunum aldrei lýkur, þeir draga sig í hlé Og nóttin lætur ekkert í té Steininn aldrei holast, hann kvarnast Barnið aldrei brosir, það þarfnast Við höfnina liggur skipið ómannað Og peningarnir löngu farnir annað Vatnið hreinsar ekki, það gárast Konan aldrei grætur, hún tárast Maðurinn heldur aldrei af stað Aðeins öldurnar gera það ~ "A House by the Sea" The sun never shines it burns The world never goes it turns The wind never blows it wails And the ship never sets sail The stars never twinkle they flicker The seasons never change they bicker The days never end they withdraw There’s nothing to fight for but the war The child never smiles it needs The wound never heals it bleeds Money never stays it flees No one is down by the sea The girl never cries she whimpers The hand never strikes it lingers The man never goes he stays No one leaves but the waves Our campaign is doing great, 66% of the funds have been raised, we have high hopes for the next two weeks! >> http://igg.me/at/iceland-rgb Check out the campaign on Indegogo >> igg.me/at/iceland-rgb More about the book and the campaign Our book is called "Iceland, rauður grænn blár", in honour of the colours of the Icelandic landscapes: rauður red: volcanoes, lava fields, fumaroles... grænn green: mountains, green fields, farm lands... blár blue: glaciers, rivers, ocean...
