The closed Capital City Studios caught fire in Olympia Washington on the morning of April 20th, 2015. The building was a former church built in the Spanish Revival style in the late 1930's. Vacant for seven years due to groundwater contamination from the gas station next door the building fell into disrepair.

            • SABBAT

              02:45

              from Karl Philips / Added

On Wednesday April 15th at 8.30 a.m. Karl Philips executed his performance SABBAT on the side of the ring road around the city of Antwerp, Belgium. A rough video just less than three minutes long is the only documentation of this performance. The title SABBAT underlines what we see: a person taking the time to withhold himself from activity. The artist is standing in front of a wall with trees behind it. He is enjoying the morning sun while cars are rhythmically racing past. The rectangular spot of sunlight he is standing in is a reflection coming from the windows of a corporate building across the street. The person is statically facing a geometric architectural structure and the only things moving are the sun and the people in their cars going to work. Though it is not overemphasized in the video, this invokes a sense of time like we often see in Neolithic structures. Of course Philips’ tone is much more understated. He’s just standing in the sun. By choosing a specific location he turns a commercial building into an analog solar panel for his own moment of joy. It’s like he’s reminding the people in their cars and inside the building of the option to refuse participation or even the option not to burn out. Like Philips’ other work SABBAT spawns from a longing to understand architecture. But his subtle, semi-improvised choices also articulate his background in scenography. The frontal lighting is somewhat reminiscent of the way photographers manipulate light to seduce the viewer, especially in advertisement photography. It’s not unimportant to note that this kind of imagery can also often be found on the side of the road. The setting may also bring to mind the story of the Greek cynic Diogenes asking Alexander the Great to step out of his sunlight. Prolonging this analogy we could refer to Michel Foucault when he stated that the cynical philosopher risks his life not by speaking the truth but by embodying it. “His life becomes the very form of truth”. Maybe this comparison is a bit excessive for a minimal performance that is not exactly life-threatening but it does indicate the potential power that is substantially hidden in Philips’ work. The seemingly modest approach contrasts strongly with the symbolic gravity. Karl Philips eloquently instigates intellectual combustions that redefine our sense of the space we share and his distinctive undertone of ‘mild activism’ is a recognizable, recurring tactic to do so.
