      • California Farming Crisis

        02:51

        from Gina Silva / Added

Farmer Jean Sagouspe is losing millions of dollars. More than a 1,000 acres of his almond trees are dead. He says, having no water supply tends to have that result. "It's devastating. It makes me sick," says Sagouspe. He's been a farmer in the San Joaquin Valley for the last 45 years. This year, because of the severe drought and tighter government regulations since the 1990's, Sagouspe doesn't have enough water for all of his crops. He has to let some them go to waste. It's costing Sagouspe more than $10 million dollars. He's had to lay off 25% of his staff. He's not alone. Farmers in Central California say they are letting as many as 500,000 acres sit idle because there's no water. They're estimating losses in the billions. In the small farming communities of Firebaugh and Mendota, businesses are shutting down. The Mayor of Mendota says the unemployment rate is up to 34%. His reaction? "It's a tragedy. It's something that shouldn't happen." Farmers say the government restrictions placed on the agriculture business are to blame. They say, combined with the drought they can not sustain their business. And even though President Obama promised millions of dollars in aid to California farmers, Sagouspe and others in the San Joaquin valley say, what they need is water not money. Unfortunately, they received another devastating blow last week. Federal officials announced that despite the drought conditions, California farmers would get no water through a system of rivers, canals and reservoirs because there isn't enough water to go around. The farmers and residents of Firebaugh and Mendota say in the end, we're all going to pay. "We feed the nation, what comes out of this valley can feed a nation and they're stripping it, right underneath us."
