Neon art by Michael Flechtner. 1986. 28 feet long. 14 neon space shuttles. Each one is 2 feet long and light sequentially to give the illusion of the Space Shuttle coming in for a "touch and go." Each shuttle is configured differently to portray the wheels lowering and raising and engines firing and powering up. I was half way through bending up the shuttles when the Challenger exploded. I hoped like heck that my shuttle would not meet the same fate.

Neon art by Michael Flechtner. 1988. 3' by 4' by 14' H. I was playing with the term Pop Tart...you know...those amazing toaster pastries! I also had a fascination with toasters and sharks. One thing led to another and soon I had my four foot sharks somersaulting out of a toaster! If you watch closely, you will see the light blue handle go up followed by the sharks!

In the heart of Los Angeles, two neon visionaries find their place in the ever-changing landscape of light. Michael Flechtner, a world-renowned artist, makes his living by crafting artwork out of neon tubes, and just finished the latest stamp for the US Post Office. Larry Albright, inventor of the plasma ball, now houses an entire workshop of abandoned glowing contraptions, and reminisces the days when neon was appreciated. Yet, in the midst of the darkness, the Museum of Neon Art serves as a reminder of the potential for neon as a living, evolving form of artwork which may just have a surprisingly bright future. Filmed on Super 16mm and Canon 7D.
