A nice break for the hard working Vimeo Staff? I suggest a Cabrio-trip from Cannes to Monaco or heli flight, a yacht trip to Saint Tropez and the best Cannes (filmfestival) hotel accomodations. (Google takes over soon and will pay for the trip, we hope) Who wants to join? Shots with HC7 on Steadicam Jr. and Sony V1.

          • Packing for International Photography and Video Assignments - With Simeon Quarrie

International Photographer and Cinematographer Simeon Quarrie provides a few tips on how he and his team pack for International assignments. Traveling for photo and video shoots can be great fun. Though the actual journey can be stressful. I don’t relax until my bags come off the baggage claim belts and we pass through immigration. Immigration is always less stressful when you travel within the EU if you are living with its boarders or internal flights within the US. Packing bags is a tricky balance as often what you need and want is way over the limit for many of us. This trip to Italy had a hand luggage allowance of only 10kg! Um...thats a bag and a camera. We had to fly in 3 cameras, multiple lenses, light stands, strobes, light modifiers, laptop, hard drives. Even with 3 crew members this was tight. Fortunately we had suitcases too. The key is to keep the key gear and the very expensive items in the hand luggage. The rest we put in the suitcases. If you have a lot of gear the recommended method is to use a freight company to fly the gear in separately as it will be fully insured, unlike gear in your suitcase. With gear in your suitcase it’s down to your travel insurance or photography insurance and this isn’t always good enough if gear is lost in transit. Ok worst scenario, if you lost your suitcases, could you work without the gear you packed in them? Little things like loosing a canon charger on a trip to India could ruin a wedding or corporate shoot. I nearly always fly an assistant with me to extend my luggage allowance. If you are flying out with a couple for a pre-wedding shoot, check if they are willing to take a camera or some other piece of equipment. Also choose the right airline. Check your options. Always weigh your equipment before actually checking in. Checking in over the limit would result in an additional payment or a bag going into the hold or both! For unusual pieces of equipment, print off product details from the website or save the page on your phone or iPad. Security may not understand why your are traveling with a large battery in your hand luggage. I hope this helps a little. Please feel free to post your questions or suggestions on International travel. Also if you have a question that you would like answered on video get in touch. Thanks for reading and watching. Happy shooting.

A visualisation of the northern European airspace returning to use after being closed due to volcanic ash. Due to varying ash density across Europe, the first flights can be seen in some areas on the 18th April 2010 and by the 20th everywhere is open. Now with added CO2 burn rate analytics. The flight data is courtesy of flightradar24.com and RadarVirtuel.com and covers a large fraction of Europe. There are a few gaps and no coverage over the Atlantic, but the picture is still clear. The map data is CC-by-SA openstreetmap.org and contributors. This CC-by-SA visualisation was produced by itoworld.com with support from ideasintransit.org

Marty was cool enough to let me onto his roof last year, where I started a film about pigeon fanciers in Brooklyn. It's been done a couple times before but I would like to try different visual techniques for photographing the birds! coo roo-c'too-coo!

Deep Listening Institute's Art on the Wall Virtual Gallery presents: “Flights” by Suiren, copyright 2011 - sumi, china paint on paper Directly working with sumi, china paint on paper, the process is like flying--soaring and rising within a completely open and free space inside one’s mind and heart. Inspired by music from Flightpatterns, a CD by Open Graves--Paul Kikuchi, percussion, Jesse Olsen, guitar--with Stuart Dempster, trombone. The paintings are rendered in the moment in a totally unrestricted way, tapping deep into the unconscious to express the un-expressible. Exhilarating and transforming, the process reveals with complete honesty one’s innermost truth.
