A man suspended in mid-air above the ground tries desperately to reach the ground, but cannot. Gravity is curiously absent. Not only is he suspended in mid-air, but he is also suspended in an infinite loop, never reaching his goal and never touching the ground. His motion is captivating, and his existence is beautiful, yet altogether, his actions are futile. The action that is taking place in the work is also self-referential to the 2D-animation process. I observed the entirety of this concept being illustrated in the first chapter of Ecclesiastes: In Ecclesiastes 1:3-4, it says “What profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? One generation passes away, another generation comes; but the earth abides forever.” The floating man never redeems the fruit of his labor and while his existence is temporary, the earth that he is so desperately trying to reach will remain permanent long after he ceases to live. We are presented with the concept of the loop in Ecclesiastes 1:9 which says, “That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.” Clearly, the actions of the floating man aren’t new. They cannot be new because he is in a loop. In this way, the actions of the floating man represent the passing of generations as well as the fleeting nature of our efforts to leave our mark on the world. And in summary, Ecclesiastes 1:14 says, “I have seen all the works done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” The floating man desperately grasps for the wind trying to touch the earth but the earth is permanent and his labor is fleeting. It will ultimately be forgotten, no matter how hard he tries even if he were able to touch the ground. Much like an animator, the floating man isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before. His work will be overshadowed and replaced by newer works with the passage of time. His toils will prove futile, and his efforts are as transient as his life, because “all is vanity and grasping for the wind.”

Possibility Place LLC wanted to create a unique entertainment experience that combined cutting edge facial scanning technology with 3D printing and interactive video - called AvaStars (www.AvaStars.com). Float created a process that combines a number of advanced technologies to instantaneously capture a detailed three dimensional model of your face and then transform you into a fully articulated 3D printed doll and a custom interactive video. The AvaStarShip makes the underlying technology friendly and easy to use. Float worked with Possibility Place to create a standalone, self contained retail kiosk. We created an interface that makes the complex scanning process automated, fast, reliable, and most importantly - fun Cameras adjust to your height automatically, the picture is taken at precisely the right time, and the user gets instant feedback on their progress. Within a few seconds the process is complete and the customer is transformed into the character of their dreams. Float created a series of 18 digital characters featured in dramatic 90 second animated video shorts. Float worked with Possibility Place to develop the character concepts and the stories, and directed and produced all the content that brings to life the ‘you of your dreams’ on screen. This unique retail experience was launched in November of 2014 in 2 high profile mall locations in St.Louis and Chicago with plans to launch many more in 2015. Customers are more loyal to an experience when they can customize it and use it to interact with friends. AvaStars is designed to encourage social play at it’s core. Float created a mobile app that allows people to take their digital AvaStar and further customize it at home with new clothing and accessories, hair styles, poses, backgrounds, and messages and then share that through their social media channels. Float is very proud to have been part of a this amazing and ground breaking project. Visit AvaStars.com for more information, and be sure to check out some great news coverage on Fox 2 St Louis and WCIU Chicago.

When Whirlpool/Amana needed a way to bring their extensive product line to retail stores, their design agency, Kaleidoscope, came to Float for an innovative solution that would distinguish them from the competition and aid the closing of a sale in the "final 3 feet". The Amana Interactive Kiosk is a full size kitchen appliance vignette with a standard LCD display that is aware of it's surroundings. The installation detects potential customers and greets them with a friendly, eye-catching introductory screen. Then the fun begins! Touching and feeling appliances is the most compelling way of convincing customers to buy them. On the Amana Interactive Kiosk, simply opening a door of any of the appliances drives a rich on-screen message about the benefits of the product, such as energy or water efficiency. Float's Anything Interactive technology drives the experience, requiring no need for consumers to learn an interface and no changes to the appliances themselves. In fact, the vignettes were assembled in store by sales associates. The Amana Interactive Kiosk was launched in home improvement retailers in locations across the US in late 2013 and early 2014. Initial results showed a dramatic rise in sales of appliances promoted by the kiosks and a general rise in interest in the brand as a whole. In a crowded retail space, the key to converting customers is creating an intuitive, memorable, and engaging brand experience. Float's Anything Interactive technology provides a cost effective solution to achieving increased customer engagement and ultimately sales for any product or display.
