Excerpt from an Upcoming Documentary about Blind Photographer Flo Fox Just Who Is Flo Fox? In this intimate and timely portrait, we represent a truly inspiring life. Flo Fox is already famous for her work that captures the essence of Manhattan. She has struggled with her disability, yet it has only made her work stronger. By putting this film into the world, we hope to encourage and inspire people to do the best job they can to transform disability into strength. This is what Flo does each day, and with legendary wit, humor, talent and charm. Flo has chronicled gritty realism in Manhattan and won awards for her work on the rise of graffiti, New York night life, and on Times Square. She showed in Paris and London and published several books of her work. By the early eighties, Flo was fully in the public eye, hosting her own talk show on A&E, Foto Flo. In the eighties and nineties, she appeared on the Today Show with Tom Snyder, Regis & Kathy Lee, as well as NDR German TV, and NHK Japanese TV. Flo dated among the rich and famous, and her life-rights were optioned for a TV movie. All the while, Flo was becoming less and less mobile. She began to advocate for the rights of disabled citizens like herself, purchasing concrete to make into ramps for wheelchairs and scooters, and encouraging business owners and public transit to make their stores scooter- and wheelchair-accessible. In the early 2000s, Flo began a battle with lung cancer, and has been in treatment for the disease since 2005. Today, Flo can move only her left arm, and shoots with the help of an aide. Flo continues to make work, and has in recent years learned to use digital technology to compile her photographic work into video collage. Flo copes with her disabilities with surprising and inspiring lightness. She has continued to show her photography worldwide and advocate in New York City. Most recently, Flo appeared in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.
