The EA sluice gates at Eastville on the River Frome help to manage the flow of water, which normally travels underneath Bristol at this point. But in flood conditions the gates open to allow the river to by-pass the city (and prevent the excess water coming up through the ground) via a giant interceptor tunnel that transports it, through 5 miles of piping, to the Avon Gorge. When I visited on 1st May (for the Multi-Story Water project www.multi-story-eastville.co.uk) the river was in spate and the furious roaring of the water through the open sluices was demanding to be filmed behind its fenced enclosure - like a feeding frenzy at the zoo.
