This is THE perfect monopod for live event video. It's perfect for all those times where a tripod is just too bulky. Today I thought I would really stretch the SX1 as far as possible by putting it into the sports arena and shoot some field hockey. As a part time sports, wedding and portrait photographer I'm very used to shooting stills as I've covered a few hundred matches but never tried video at a game. I also was using my new fluid head and tripod rather than using my camera tripod, although I'm not really sure the benefit is seen in these shots I'm really impressed with the improvement that it made to the control of the camera and when shooting more 'normal' subjects I know it will be a huge benefit. I have mixed feelings as to how the camera has done, I have to keep reminding myself it is a digital camera and not a pure video camera but the more video I shoot the more I long for more in a few areas. There are a few photos included that I took today with my Canon 1D mkIII and Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 lens. Now that quality in video would certainly rock my world.

Missed out on a used Miller DS10 today...curse you ebay and last minute bidding! But before the disappointment, I dropped down to my local independent pro video gear guys at http://www.videoguys.com.au to have a play and see what all the fuss was about with this head. Thanks guys! People are always throwing the line that the difference is "night and day" between a cheap head vs a true fluid head, and after 5 minutes with each I honestly couldn't see the blinding $600 difference between a sub $200 and $900+ video head. Ok, well after seeing the clips over and over again during editing I can see the difference. With the 701HDV you can get pretty good results but it will probably take you several shots before you get it right. The DS10 on the other hand will probably get you that shot in one take which can be do or die in a live shoot. It is also a lot smoother when stopping and starting. I now know what "sticking" looks like. The drag adjustment however could have been better and it's not the lightest thing to lug around all day. So would I pay that extra for those minor added benefits? Yes, cause time is money =) That said I would probably still pick up a 701HDV as a super light traveler kit though. This is obviously not a proper technical test and keep in mind that this is the first time that I have ever played with a fluid head or a tripod for that matter. Still have to find a Sachtler FSB6 to play with....abit hard to find down this neck of the world. Format: 720p Shutter: 50 ISO: 400 i think Lens: 20mm f1.7 + Zeiss 85mm f1.4 both at f2 Music: Sade - Smooth Operator This video is a good example too of how the 20mm hunts for focus. Feel free to chime in your thoughts on this fluid head in this thread I started. http://www.vimeo.com/forums/topic:23154

With a new hack for my GH2 and a new fluid head video monopod I wanted to see what both were capable of. I shot these clips over an afternoon in the new forest in Dorset UK, November 2011. The hack is a 66Mbit patch and all bar 2 of the shots are ungraded. The monopod was the manfrotto 561BHDV which was light, sturdy and a real pleasure to use over lugging a tripod around. Being only one leg the monopod was able to get some interesting angles but it takes practice to keep things smooth. The Gh2 definitely has a great look for such a small camera, I only used one lens, the 20mm F1.7. The AVHCD files really need to be converted for editing. Using a raid 0 array and a Quadro enhanced mac pro it's still pretty slow to edit/scrub with those files. Hope you enjoy the shots!

This is a test of minimum/maximum weight load for this new video fluid head. It performs miraculously well, with good solid damping and no rebounding. See the review it was intended for here: cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=29568
