1. 4wt. vs Large Rainbow

    from Tightline Productions / Added

Here in New Jersey, trout are really starting to respond to Isonychia dries particularly after dark. Fishing an Iso Iso Baby dry fly last week I hooked into a really nice rainbow that jumped all over the place then took several fast, deep runs. After more than 20 years of heavy use, my trusty Redington DFR 9' 4wt. finally gave out and broke in two spots. Not the rod or the reel's fault, all me just applying too much pressure trying to get the fish in the net. At least the rod went out in a blaze of glory, but it will be sorely missed.

Having ascended the steep learning curve, I finally finished my first fly rod build, a 6' 6" 2 Wt built on an Olde English IM8 blank. I took it out today for its trial run, hoping it would not break on the first cast. I didn't find any fish, but it was a beautiful day to be out, one of those rare days in Kansas when the wind is not blowing 50 mph. The rod didn't fall apart and it cast very well, so all in all a sucessful day. This was also my first chance to play with my new camera.

One weekend in February 2015 on the Salmon River proved to be more than successful. Battling a 15mph headwind and freezing eyelets all weekend was worth it. Lots of wild and 2-salt fish. There was no down time and I wasn't able to capture aesthetics so this film is full of straight fish porn. Steelhead in the Salmon River swim over 800 river miles to make it to their destination and they deserve utmost respect when fighting and handling; especially wild ones. Enjoy this short film. I hope this inspires others to get out and go fish for Steelhead and experience flyfishing on whole other level. ***For more information on Salmon River steelhead visit www.idahoadventures.com/fishing-hunting-trips -or call- 1-800-789-WAVE My brother guides for his outfit and the Owner Mark is extremely knowledgeable and knows a lot about Idaho steelhead and can assist you! Murray's Fly Shop Fly Fishing Tips: Caring for your Fly Fishing Rod - Harry Murray discusses how he cleans his fly rods and generally cares for them year in and year out, some since 1954. As Harry states, a little cleaning goes a long way toward extending the life of your fly fishing rod but the single most important tip is to be absolutely sure your fly fishing rod is DRY (especially the grip) prior to putting it back in its sack and fly rod tube for storage longer than three or four days. The reason it is imperative your fly rod be dry is the simple fact that we don't fish in sterile water. The dirt a fly rod picks up through a day of use can easily lead to mold and mildew forming on your fly rod once it is placed in a dark rod tube with no air movement to allow for drying.
