FoodWorks is a cohort internship program for Middlebury College students interested in local food and sustainable development. Its mission is to provide summer internship opportunities that enhance student learning and engagement in food studies. Each student works four days a week in an internship focused on a different aspect relating to local food. On the fifth day, students participate together in a curriculum designed to meet targeted learning objectives on sustainable agriculture and ecology; food systems; community and economic development; nutrition and health; and other topics such as food security and justice, policy, culture and traditions. In addition to the 5th day component, students have formal and informal opportunities to engage in the community around food, further reinforcing and integrating the learning throughout their summer. Middlebury FoodWorks was piloted in Louisville last summer and expanded to include our Vermont partners in 2013. Middlebury FoodWorks is a program sponsored by the Center for Careers and Internships, Office of Academic Affairs, and the Organic Farm (MCOF).

Louisville – it may not be the first place that comes to mind, but is THE place where the local food scene is exploding! “Named the Top Destination of 2013” by Lonely Planet, as well as voted “Most Compassionate City," Louisville is more than home to the Kentucky Derby, it is an unexpected destination gaining national recognition for their local food initiatives. Be sure to check out the good work Fifth Day leader Joe Franzen is doing at Fern Creek High School with his food literacy class and cooking club. Also, Joe and Bread Loaf students (as well as Fern Creek teachers) Brent Peters and Paul Barnwell ‘04 have created a connection with the Navajo Nation. In February, the three teachers took a group of Fern Creek students to visit the Navajo Nation, learning and sharing food practices in the home, in the classroom and beyond. Be sure to check out Paul’s blog Mindful Stew about their trip. Joe, Paul, and Brent, and many others are the reason Louisville has received national recognition for its efforts to deepen and develop the local food movement. At a Food Summit in February, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and renowned author Wendell Berry outlined ways Louisville’s local food economy can become a sustainable economic model.

Food Works provides opportunities to young people to make a difference in their communities. The youth comes from a diverse background, 14 to 21 years in age, they learn valuable skills how to communicate more effectively with adults, grow and market the food they produce at farmers markets, and provide fresh produce to low income families nearby. For our stay in Portland, Oregon we filmed at Janus Youth Food Works project where teenagers manage a farm. They make money at it too. We spent a couple days with them, followed by a meal with Plate and Pitchfork, a wonderful Dinner on a Farm series.
