I was approached by founder of Freedom Charity, Aneeta Prem to make a short film which would highlight the recent criminalisation of forced marriage in the UK. As a vocal campaigner for equality I was keen to get involved and with the help of the charity I started to research the issue. It was important that we were careful not to alienate people or to cause unnecessary offence, whilst at the same time reaching the target demographic. I took advice from a range of sources regarding my proposed treatment and whilst some organisations were reluctant to give a firm opinion, Aneeta and I felt it that with careful handling the filming should go ahead regardless. The next challenge was to find my lead actor; luckily my old acting coach, Jon Sidgwick from London Actors' Workshop was hosting a showcase and so I went down and was impressed by Jabeen's performance. The rest fell into place fairly simply - to keep costs low we shot in my house and neighbourhood and the actors all worked for free because they were keen to help spread awareness of the issue. Sadly, in Britain, forced marriage, dishonour killings and the oppression of women is far more prevalent than many realise. There is a dedicated team in the UK who respond to requests for help from girls at risk from forced marriage. In some cases they even travel abroad to help girls return to Britain if they request it. I would urge anyone affected by the issues highlighted in the video - who fears for themselves, a friend or family member - to get in touch with Freedom Charity as the support they offer can be invaluable. We had the pleasure to work on this powerful short film. Forced Marriage transcends more than one culture and is prevalent all over the world including in the UK. 'Our Girl' is a three minute film aimed at getting communities talking and acting towards putting a stop to forced marriage. The film is part animated and it features several filmed scenarios, all based on true cases of forced marriage. 'Our Girl' was made by Animage Films in partnership with the Forced Marriage Unit and AVA (Against Violence and Abuse). The film was written and directed by Ruth Beni and animated by the Oscar nominated artist Erica Russell. The film will be disseminated by specialist organisations in their work with communities and young people, as well as help raise public awareness with the clear message that forcing someone to marry is a breach of basic human rights and is now a criminal offence in the UK. Accompanying 'Our Girl' is 'True Stories' a six minute film with extended dramatised interviews based real testimonies from Forced Marriage victims.
