1. Seeing Green in Iowa

from The White House Added 645 10 2

The President visits Trinity Structural Towers, the former Maytag plant which now houses a green manufacturing facility that produces towers for wind energy production, in Newton. Iowa, a leader in wind energy, is a perfect example of how a community can rebuild a local economy with investments in clean energy and efficiency. Trinity employs dozens of former Maytag employees and is part of the revitalization of a town hard hit by the closing of the Maytag plant. President Obama gives remarks discussing components of his comprehensive energy plan, which include promoting clean energy innovation to help end our dependence on foreign oil, creating millions of new jobs, and preventing the worst consequences of climate change. Our current energy policy lacks security in a number of ways; economically, militarily, environmentally, and diplomatically, to name a few. General Farrell details the threats, and more importantly, the role DoD must play to secure sustainable energy in this video as he promotes the most recent report produced by CNA titled “Powering America’s Defense.” We hope you enjoy the insight provided here by General Farrell as he speaks on behalf of the energy general cadre. Today, security rests in movement, and the operational prowess of our armed forces may be just the vehicle needed to lead us to a sustainable, secure, and robust energy future.

In "The Mix" Susan talks to T. Boone Pickens, CEO of BP Capital, Sen Tom Carper, D.-Del., and Sara Banaszak, Senior Economist with the American Petroleum Institute, about what it will take to get the U.S. Weaned off foreign oil. Pickens says electric vehicles will be a help, but they won't put a dent in a huge source of petroleum consumption: heavy-duty transportation fuel. He believes if the nation's fleet of 18-wheelers is converted to natural gas, imports from OPEC will be cut in half. He also calls for a consortium of North American Countries, the U.S., Canada and Mexico, to band together for oil production and distribution, using the resources of each to help with each other's unique needs. Carper, who is behind a bill aimed at reducing America's foreign oil dependence, says EVs will help a lot, especially if gasoline taxes or overall fuel costs rise as a deterrent to increase consumption. He says even if those prices rise, if fuel economy increases significantly, consumers will save money overall. But Banaszak says she's concerned that fuel tax or price increases will disproportionately affect low-income people who rely heavily on their cars. She also says that API has learned that the transition to new technologies, like EVs usually takes time. She sees it being phased-in over a number of years.

America's dependence on foreign oil is not a new issue. Every president since Richard Nixon in 1974 has urged the nation to find alternatives to imported oil. It's an issue that has led the U.S. and other countries into war. Susan McGinnis takes a look at the security issues surrounding America's dependence on foreign oil. She speaks with retired Army Gen. Paul Eaton who knows the history of wars over access to energy sources and discusses the relationships between America and its top oil suppliers. She also meets former Army Sgt. Chis Miller, an Iraq War veteran, who is now making another argument against the use of foreign oil: the danger to our own troops. He leads Operation Free, an organization promoting the idea of energy independence as a way to keep Americans from fighting in the Middle East. Susan also talks to former CIA Director and Republican energy adviser James Woolsey, who details why importing foreign oil poses a national security threat, and John Felmy of the American Petroleum Institute, who believes concerns about the country's top foreign oil suppliers are overblown. Eaton, Miller and Woolsey believe America must become independent of foreign oil, using American resources and technology to enhance its security by getting its energy at home.
