The forest became our teacher along Kaluapuhi Trail in Kōkeʻe State Park. As Hui o Laka volunteers began to hand weed this rain forest trail, they discovered the key tenets of the Kōkua Kōkeʻe (Help Kōkeʻe in Hawaiian) program: the return of the hand tool, gradualism, and on site composting. The New CCC "forest gardening" means 100% removal of all weeds, not just selected weedy species, and that means returning again and again. "Gardening is a promise to return," and return these volunteers do, year after year! Their worked is centered at and supported by the CCC Camp. and Facebook: http://facebook.com/KokeeMuseum Website: http://kokee.org

A Civilian Conservation Corps camp, set in lush native forest in the mountains of Kauaʻi, is abuzz with fresh life as youthful volunteers restore the 1935 complex of wood-framed buildings for a new era of conservation history. Itʻs "The New C.C.C.," the COMMUNITY Conservation Corps, linking past and present to save forests for the future! Renovations to the once-abandoned camp, placed on the National and Hawaiʻi State Registers of Historic Sites in 1996, were initiated by Hui o Laka in 1990, all to honor Joseph M. Souza, Jr (d. 1990), one of the founders of Hui o Laka and chief architect of the Hawaiʻi State Parks System. This clip is one of two and shows work accomplished between 2010-2011. CCC Camp... The old C.C.C. Camp in Kōkeʻe State Park was pretty much abandoned after Hurricane ʻIniki in 1982, its rich history of service covered with brambles and weeds, its windows but not its spirit broken and scattered. But efforts to restore it, initiated by Hui o Laka in 1990, provoked a wave of spontaneous community recall. They came forward with stories and old scrapbooks - Old-timers from Civilian Conservation Corps days, from the US Army 443rd Aviation & Construction Battalion that used the site in WWII, from Job Corps "boys," from Youth Conservation Corps "kids" who all spent time at this "campus in the woods" over the decades. Itʻs a story of finding inspiration for the future in the past, of a community pledging to continue the legacy of conservation and service started in the1930s. This is the first clip of two about renovation of one of the few intact CCC Camps in America. CCC Camp… On Facebook: http://facebook.com/KokeeMuseum Website: http://kokee.org
