The masons are working the details now, pinning (literally with steel pins) the cap blocks to the walls. In cases where they won't be exposed, the caps are drilled through from the top and the pins are anchored with epoxy. In places where the caps are visible, the pin holes have to be drilled from the underside and aligned perfectly with the vertical rods coming up through the walls.

Lots of blocks have been carefully positioned and most of the walls are taking shape, and so it's all starting to look more like a house now. This walkaround starts at the northeast corner of the lot, moves south along College Avenue (looking west) and then west along McDonald (looking north and northeast). All of these photos and many others are included in the October Gallery.

The blocks that are being placed atop the concrete layer which was poured over the flashing on the lower level of the perimeter are all the same size, so some must be cut to fit. Anyone who has ever had to cut or bore into masonry will know that what this man is doing is not easy, or fun.

Jeremy Farrow, of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies in Spencer, Mass., offers a brief demonstration of the tools and techniques he used to machine some of the standard Teflon shapes that were incorporated into the block molds to create the intricate Wright designs.

We approach from the west along McDonald Street and turn north at College Avenue. You can view all of the individual shots by clicking here. The Lake Morton Neighborhood Association just conducted its annual Historic Home Tour this weekend. Maybe this house will be part of that in future years.

Masons must make complicated adjustments to the shape of the blocks that will fit on and around all of the steel components. See more photos in the December Gallery.

From the western fence on Johnson Avenue, then east along McDonald (the south side of the site) to College Avenue, and north to the fence between the site and the neighbor's house. A cheerful man who graciously allowed us access to get a look from there. You can view all of the individual shots in the January Walkabout gallery, and more photos in the January Gallery.

I saw the drill the other day without seeing it operate. Just happened by yesterday with my still camera, which records video (but not HD), and got a look at what it's for. There are some closer looks in the August Gallery.

Holes must be drilled to receive and seat the vertical rods which are slowly becoming a "forest". There are no sounds of diesel engines or "back-up" beepers, but the work proceeds intensely as the blocks are sorted out and carried to their assigned location.

The carpenters are busy now laying down the plywood decking in advance of the roof installation which is due to begin this weekend. It was pretty windy on Wednesday and made it a little tricky to be handing up the big sheets. More progress on Thursday and we can hear them nailing and sawing today.
