(an homage to Helen Frankenthaler) performed at PTY, UVIC. March 2013 Programme notes: Sweeping gestures from the octet, mirrors the expansive and fluid motion of a paintbrush. Sounds from the ensemble and tape emerge and submerge, existing in the foreground and background simultaneously- staining each other and existing as one. The consistent interweaving in these two different elements create a forced conversation within a malleable soundscape. Helen Frankenthaler (1928 - 2011) was known as an abstract expressionist, hugely influential in American postwar painting. She worked with early small-scaled watercolor paintings; later she translated these skills into her large-scale oil paintings. By pouring paint and using very few brushstrokes, she achieved a very fluid, watercolor-like effect in her oil works. Frankenthaler often exposes the unprepared canvas, treating it as a crucial component to the finished painting.
