            • Ketchup Man Time

              from Josh Binder Added 21.3K 34 2

Format: HD Length: 30 Sec. Completed: 27 February 2009 Budget: $100.00 Log line A Heinz Ketchup Commercial: Ketchup Man comes all over his hot girlfriend making all his neighbors jealous. Blog Pre-Production When Shaun and I were writing Ketchup Man for the Heinz contest a couple years before we came up with this idea first. We thought it was funny as hell to sell ketchup with sex, but knew it was too risky so we did our rock-n-roll backyard party idea instead. After losing we were kind of bummed. I mean everyone loved the commercial, maybe it wasn't family enough for Heinz. So in that respect I decided it would be best to make a commercial all about families....and how they are made. The only snag this film had was the actor from the last Ketchup Man bailed out two nights before the shoot. I didn't have time to recast so I pushed it back a month, I mean there was no deadline so it didn't matter, just sucks to get everyone and everything ready a month in advance and then it crashes. Production My friend Doug (a low rent Tucker Max) jumped on the opportunity to be Ketchup Man. We shot this is September all in one day. Most of the effects were shot in camera (using strings to make paintings, and lights fall, etc). But the ketchup hand and the ketchup cum had to be shot on green screen. I think the neighbors were weirded out after hearing sex moans come out of an apartment all morning and then Doug steps out for a smoke completely covered in red face paint and wearing red tights. Then again its Rogers Park. Most of the shots came out looking good, and everything was donw with one to three takes each, but the last shot got messed up. The last shot I drew had a position for the fry girl that when we did it on set it wasn't physically possible for a human to bend that way while wearing a giant red box. So after hours of setting up the fake ketchup the shot was pretty much useless. So we shot an alternative. Post-Production The problem with the alternative shot was the fries and ketchup looked like carved and red painted foam. The art needed more time to set up. So I fixed it in post, by masking out other fries and rearranging it all to look more like a box of fries covered in ketchup. I used this masking trick on three other shots to give them more dynamic lighting, and make it look like night time. You can see the difference in the Outtakes. Learned mistakes from Gusanitos, I had recorded the music months before the shoot, that way I knew how long shots were supposed to be. Doug played the scratchy guitar for the porno song. The ketchup arm coming out of his head took me approximately 20 minutes to put together. HD is purely amazing for chroma key work. The ketchup squirt at the end we had shot really ketchup coming out of a bottle. The only way it would have looked right after being chroma keyed is if we had shot it at a high speed, or shot a giant ketchup bottle squirting massive amounts of ketchup. The tiny squirts were too fast and too small to register as anything happening on screen. So I called in my post effects guru Mike. I told him I need ketchup cum all over my face and he could deliver the goods. It must have been funny as hell when his wife was looking over his shoulder as he carefully crafted together red cum balls, and I'm on the speaker phone telling him "the cum needs to be more chunky and wet!" A friend after seeing this said I would be really good at directing commercials for porno films. I think if I directed a commercial for a candy bar you would think it was for a porno.
