    • How typical are the satellites of the Milky Way?

We are interested in the cosmological context of the Milky Way -- is it a special galaxy in any way? We found thousands of galaxies like it in the SDSS sky survey, and also thousands of matching halos in the Bolshoi simulation, and asked, how many have neighbours like the Magellanic Clouds? In both the real and simulated Universes we find that roughly 5% of Milky Way-like galaxies have 2 satellites like the Magellanic Clouds -- our galaxy is a bit unusual!

      • The Eagle simulations: temperature of cosmic gas

        from Rob Crain / Added

Volume rendering of a simulation from the Eagle project (home.strw.leidenuniv.nl/~crain/?page_id=2). The intensity corresponds to the density of cosmic gas, whilst colour encodes its temperature. Red roughly corresponds to 100,000 degrees Kelvin (considered 'warm' by astronomers), whilst white corresponds to 10-100 million degrees Kelvin. Gas is heated to such high temperatures by gravitational accretion shocks, and the injection of thermal energy by feedback from supernovae and black holes. The simulation volume is 25 cMpc across, with periodic boundary conditions, and was evolved with a version of the GADGET-3 TreePM-SPH code adapted specifically for Eagle. The simulation was run and visualised on the COSMA-5 supercomputer at Durham University (UK), by the EAGLE team. The visualisation was created by Rob Crain (Leiden Observatory, NL) and Jim Geach (Herts University, UK) using their Typhoon toolkit. High-res and stereoscopic copies of this movie are available on request, freely available for use by scientific, educational and not-for-profit organisations. We only ask that their use is duly credited. We are happy to negotiate licensing with for-profit organisations. Replaces an earlier version of this movie with poorer time-resolution and square aspect ratio.

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
