Richard Durbin (D-IL), Chicago-area Latino leaders, community members, and immigrant advocates discussed what’s ahead for reform as legislation has advanced out of the Senate and now stands at a critical crossroads. Speakers reflected on the final Senate bill, what can be expected from the House of Representatives, how legislation may affect local communities, and what eventual implementation of immigration reform might look like in Illinois. This is the story of three UT students and their families who emigrated from Mexico and would be benefited by comprehensive immigration reform. The Gang of Eight plan could affect up to roughly 11 million undocumented people by providing them with a complex and long path to citizenship to residents that have been here since December 2011. Immigrants will also have to pass a background check, pay taxes, and pay a fine in the thousands of dollars. The bill could hit the Senate floor in June for its first legislative hurdle. Coming out of the Shadows introduces overlooked issues that have affected every aspect of the students and the lives in the U.S. It explores how the students feel about the negative stereotypes of their status as well as their struggles as children and now college students. The DREAMers express their emotions, fear of one’s own deportation and that of their families. The students once fought for the Dream Act and now are fighting for comprehensive immigration reform in order to include their parents in the movement. They are part of a UT organization, University Leadership Initiative, which informs the Latino community and encourages their participation.

How should future flows for needed workers be determined? And what will be the effects of barring access to services for the newly legalized? MPI President Demetrios G. Papademetriou discusses lessons from IRCA, economic issues, and mechanisms to allow for future immigration flows; Muzaffar Chishti, Director, MPI Office at NYU School of Law, discusses labor concerns and provides a conclusion on political realities; Michael Fix, Senior Vice President and Director of Studies and Co-Director, National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy, addresses impacts on immigrant integration, including impacts on healthcare costs; and Doris Meissner, Director of MPI’s US Immigration Policy Program, provides an overview on issues associated with a legalization program. You can contact her at kbrennanreports@gmail.com Jan. 28, 2013 BY NATHAN BYRNE AND CHRISTINA HARTMAN ANCHOR KATIE BRENNAN Senators on both sides of the aisle have agreed on a four-page document overhauling immigration. Though Democrats and Republicans are on the same page now, NBC’s Tracie Potts says the current version of the proposal is far from final. She lays out what’s on the list right now. “Border patrols, employer verification, a guest worker program, green cards for math and science grads, and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants.” How did a deal like this get done? The New York Times’ Julia Preston credits the incorporation of the Democratic insistence on a comprehensive bill that wouldn’t eventually deny citizenship with the Republican demand for strong border enforcement. As for the political timing of the announcement — it comes just before President Obama headed to Las Vegas to speak about immigration reform. [Video: WJLA] A Los Angeles Times report says that trip has a deeper purpose, though — indicating President Obama is on a mission to “bequeath to fellow Democrats … a solid electoral college base rooted in the West … ” And Republicans — they had a plan of their own. Fox News’ Bill Hemmer offered some insight on Don Imus’ show Monday morning. “I think this is going to get real legs and push through. Especially because Marco Rubio’s in on this. The Republicans, before the election, they said, if you go immigration reform, you better believe we’re going to have our fingerprints all over it.” In 2007, a bipartisan effort couldn’t get enough support from Republicans in the Senate — but after President Obama took more than 70 percent of the Latino vote this past election — Arizona Republican John McCain told ABC’s “This Week” he thinks “the time is right.” SEN. MCCAIN: “We can’t go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in illegal status … Believe it or not, I see some glimmer of bipartisanship out there.” And it’s a priority of President Obama’s — as evidenced by this from his inaugural speech: “Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to weapon the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity.” [Video: C-SPAN] The Miami Herald is referring to the group of senators as the “Gang of Eight.” The new immigration deal will be announced officially on Monday afternoon.
