UBC wanted to create an animation that helped to explain to patients and their families who suffered from asthma, the mechanism of how asthma works. This is particularly important because there are different types of asthma, each caused by different single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs. The various drugs currently on the market work in different ways, so it is essential that a person knows which type of asthma he or she has.

The sugar phosphate backbone of DNA normally wobbles back and forth between the S and N conformations, making it very difficult to create specific probes to test for single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs. Exiqon has come up with a way to lock the DNA backbone into the N conformation, a method they call LNA, or Locked Nucleic Acid, which allows scientists to much larger window in searching for specific nucleic acid combination using DNA probes. Arkitek built this animation in close collaboration with Exiqon, journeying to Denmark to confer one on one with their scientists. The 3D models built for this project correctly reflect the specific angles found in DNA.

The genome dynamically interacts with the environment as chemical switches that regulate gene expression receive cues from stress, diet, behavior, toxins and other factors. Epigenetics is the study of these reactions and the factors that influence them. For other great videos, interactive activities and more, be sure to visit: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/conten...
