          • Puppies and Gentle Leader Head Halter

The Gentle Leader Head Halter can often be very helpful for those who have children that want to walk the puppy, or for a puppy that is becoming quite the puller! Also we recommend this to our older senior citizens as well. While our experience is this type of equipement is like training wheels for a bike, some day you will not need it, but for now there is an element of safety for you and your puppy once they are trained to it. This is a great alternative when you want to just walk the puppy and not argue with him on the walk or even train him not to pull. This, once they are trained to it, takes all the argument out of it. Notice how Nate treats along the way, lots of positive reinforcement helps the puppy adjust to this awkward nose band. While most puppies and dogs are never a "fan" of the Gentle Leader, our dog Zoom as a puppy hated it but tolerated it on the walks, it offers consistency to those who are too young to train the puppy not to pull and will help your kids have more positive experiences. This is not a muzzle by any means, the band on the nose is loose enough the puppy can comfortably take treats. Some people will ask you "is that a muzzle" and it's best to explain it this way. It's like a halter for a horse, we don't put the rope around a horses neck because they are too strong and you will have no control and they'll drag you. With a head halter if you can control where the head goes, you can control where the horse goes and it's the same with dogs. As the puppy matures, more formal leash exercises will come and eventually this will no longer be needed. In the mean time if you can get your puppy trained to this, your walks and interactions with other people will be far less stressful because you will have more control over the puppy. We find the instructions that come with this collar are not all that helpful, other then how to fit it. The video shows dogs that are already trained to it and not puppies or dogs that are objecting to it. Our experience has been that if you fit it to the puppy using treats, put it on, take it off. Put it on, give a few treats then take it off. Start there, then go to put it on, and get the puppy to take a few steps, reward and remove it. You can even losen it up and let them eat their meal with it on and take it of. We do not advise you put it on and go for a walk, introduce over days, and then start your walk, be sure puppy is hungry (consider delaying breakfast) and treat along the way. You will get there, it takes patience on both ends of the leash.
