1. Geoff Dyer: How I Turned into the Writer I Am Not

In conversation with Howard A. Rodman, Professor of Screenwriting, USC School of Cinematic Arts The work of British writer Geoff Dyer is frequently classified as “unclassifiable;” his writing is wildly eclectic, yet gorgeously coherent. His new book, Another Great Day at Sea—about life on an American aircraft carrier—is at the same time a travelogue, unerring social observation, and honed comedy. Zona, his meditation on the film Stalker, by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky, was supposed to be a book about tennis; his book about D.H. Lawrence, Out of Sheer Rage, is essentially about not writing a book about D.H. Lawrence; and Yoga for People Who Can’t Be Bothered to Do It is definitely not a self-help book. Rodman and Dyer will attempt to account for the “singular restlessness” of Dyer’s writing, while happily digressing on other subjects.

Let's see now...he got his butt into the aeroplane around the 11th January 2012, and flew for 2 and a half hours with Instructor, Noel McDonogh, the 200 or so miles from Secunda (deep inside South Africa) to coastal Pietermaritzburg (50 miles from Indian Ocean). After a week of concentrated aviation, Vic Hugo went solo. As if that wasn't enough, another week later, on the 4th Feb, he passed his flight test at Geoff Dyer's Light Flight School with...flying colours. Sounds incredible? Well, you too can do it. Just learn to work those feet on finals at Light Flight farm, where the most fun can be had off the ground....(safely, of course!). Oh, by the way, Vic turned 60 on the 5th Feb. This movie includes great air to air footage taken from one of Light Flight's Aeroprakt A22 Foxbats of Vic during his flight test, another Foxbat, and awesome flybies of local skydiving strip, Angel's Way. Yellow Foxy crewed by Instructor Noel McDonogh and wingman/aerialcammer, budgie smith.

In this secular sermon, Geoff Dyer explores the historical sacrifices and successes of punctual people and the trouble caused by low-lifes who waste other people’s time. He urges us to be less sloppy about time-keeping, a virtue which he sees as increasingly threatened by a culture in which mobile phones have made arrangements increasingly approximate and flexible. Geoff Dyer is author of several books including 'Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It' (2004), 'The Ongoing Moment' (2007), 'Paris Trance' (2003) and his most recent: 'Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi' (2009). The live presentation of this sermon was delivered at The Horse Hospital, London on Sunday 30 November 2008.
