The lower panel shows wave propagation in the 1-D layered P-wave velocity model of the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera, southern Italy (see Zollo et al. 2008, Geophys. Res. Lett.), and the upper panel shows the corresponding seismogram section. The wave propagation was computed with the acoustic 2-D finite-difference code SUFDMOD2 from CWP/SU Seismic Unix, and the individual frames were generated with the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT).

                    • installation: carrizo-parkfield diaries at transport los angeles (2005)

                      from Christina McPhee Added 78 0 0

This is an archival video of the installation of large scale photomontages in the Carrizo-Parkfield Diaries, a landscape multimedia project. Imagine a nexus, 'seismic memory', between the geomorphology of earthquake country and the performance of traumatic memory visualization-- as if the earth's traces of seismic activity and our human neurologic mappings of trauma are linked....The Diaries first showed as an installation of closely hung photomontage panels at up to 8 feet in vertical scale. These images are constructed from many fragments of scientific visualizations of the Parkfield, California 6.0 earthquake of 2004, which is renowned as the first 'captured' earthquake along the San Andreas Fault in central coast California-- where constant microquakes suggest a pattern of large earthquakes at intervals of about every 20 years. Carrizo Plain, just to the southeast of Parkfield, is California's most biologically diverse landscape, home to antelope, elk, sandhill cranes and a rich plant biome. It is also the site of what has been called the 'Cadillac' of earthquake geomorphology, because a large 30 foot-plus displacement is in plain sight at Wallace Creek in the Carrizo-- the evidence of a massive quake at Fort Tejon in 1854. Since 2001, I have been investigating and mapping seismicity as a personal site construction, using, as a kind of transcription, my own recordings of waking (hypnogogic) nightmares as a tracking mechanism... to chart neurological conditions of trauma. I layer documentary photographs at Carrizo and Parkfield of phenomena ranging from abandoned homestead debris to the molasses-like slow ooze of surface shifts over 48 hours following the Parkfield tremor. In installation the large photomontage panels are designed to hang closely together, so that the effect is like a frozen vertical cinema, capturing time traces and charting remnants; for just as we can map only the evidence of quakes, and though we can anticipate the recurrence of traumatic memory, neither the neurological nor the geophysical maps can be generated for certain as prediction nor as fact. The shiny surfaces of the photomontages, since they are face mounted to high gloss acrylic, allow reflections to suggest layered correspondences between different fields. The abstraction is important as a means of displacing both personal and scientific visual data into a kind of live space..a live topology... You can also notice shots of a video loop-- this is the Carrizo Quartet performance video suite, which documents my performance work, including drawing in the dirt and alkaline deposits at Soda Lake, an alkaline sink in the center of the Carrizo Plain. The Carrizo-Parkfield Diaries is an ongoing project in drawing, remote performance, video, installation and photography. An archive of some of the works in the project is here: http://www.christinamcphee.net/carrizo/index.html See also a related new media project on the Whitney Museum of American Art Artport site here: http://artport.whitney.org/gatepages/march05.shtml Christina McPhee 2002-2011.

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
