Preceded by a short reading, this program by speaker Jeff Strang was recorded on 3/1/09 at a regular meeting of the Humanists of Greater Portland (Oregon), or HGP -- website http://portlandhumanists.org/ Abstract: HGP member Jeff Strang was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana from 1980-82, serving as a secondary school teacher and rural development organizer. He was able to pay a return visit in 1990, and went again this past July. He'll show video from his recent trip: tours of some houses (check out the tiny carbon footprint!), a primary school, a secondary boarding school, drumming and dancing, and a waterfall with lots of forest bats. He interacted with some rare Ghanaian humanists, but was unable to obtain video of these elusive creatures.

Through the intimacy of a personal perspective, we are taken to Tafo, a small town in the Akim area of Ghana. This was where the filmmaker spent his early childhood, before moving to Denmark with the family at the age of five. The family situation in Tafo provides a strikingly effective micro-cosmic view of the general transition from the Colonial to the modern world. This view is then re-enforced by the reaction of the filmmaker to his early childhood home, after nearly thirty years.
