Artist Statement For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know fully even as also I was fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12 Throughout history people have asked, “What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be real?” Even now in the twenty first century people continue to ask the age old questions and yet the answers have become even more complex. The word avatar comes from the religious tradition of Hinduism. In Hinduism an avatar is the human or animal incarnation of a deity. Today the word avatar is a used to describe a person’s online presence. It can be in the form of text like a screen name; a two-dimensional image or icon; or a three-dimensional virtual character. The relationship people have with computers and technology are ever evolving. Who we actually are; how we want to be perceived; and how others see us in today’s digital world can be controlled and manipulated. A person’s emotions are expressed, not by how we genuinely feel, but by the stoke of a key. For centuries people have aspired to create perfection of the human body. And now with current technology, those ideas have become more plausible. We can either build extensions of ourselves or create completely unique personas. Consequently, new questions arise: “Are physical bodies more real than our virtual counter parts? Could it possible that neither our physical or virtual bodies are real? Or perhaps the only thing that is truly real is our ghost inside.”
