The work comes out of a three month residency spent in Mexico City and will be shown as part of the Phoenix Exhibition at the Glasgow School of Art. The video was filmed on the morning of mass protests across Mexico, where millions turned out to protest the missing 43 students and the widespread corruption in government. In a central square, a public sculpture exhibition was being held, showcasing largely European or Eurocentric artists. As a form of protection against the waywardness of the protest, officials had these sculptures wrapped up in polythene. A transparent layer of resistance. Over the top of the video I have layered a text from Bernal Diaz’s ‘The True History of the Conquest of New Spain’, the only surviving personal account of Hernan Cortes’ invasion of Mexico. The text speaks about the destruction of an area of Mexico City, and how fertile it once was. On either side, the video is shadowed by two extracts from street side adverts for Hollywood movies. Two silent white faces, lip split where the posters don’t meet up, skin scuffed by the shoulders of crowds on their way to work. As I process my experience in Mexico, this work looks to my position as being white and European, immediately an outsider yet still aware that I bare a historic responsibility for the state of the country. Again as an artist, this work looks at the recurring colonisation of Europe and the USA, through cultural insertions into public spaces.

AlgoRhythm is an art and music event that combines contemporary electronic music with visual art. The visual art on display at the event is created by myself and each set is designed specifically for each musician playing. The graphic design is inspired by the music therefore there is an element of collaboration between the artists and the musicians. The music is interpreted into visuals considering elements such as texture, scale and form. This short film deals with the idea of self-expression and the margins that are considered to be acceptable by local standards. The reality is that even from a moral perspective, in a postmodern and metropolitan society, conventions may differ from one person to another. What is considered ‘proper’ to some may be inappropriate to others. Standards being relative in many cases, the film examines the public and agreed-upon perspective, verses the reality, behind closed doors. The questions raised include the need for current guidelines and views to be re-examined. We say, believe and advocate one thing, but when our doors are shut, something else actually takes place.

With a variety of work from the hottest artists of 2015 from one of the most prestigious art schools in the world, our second annual ‘Goldsmiths in the North’ arrives in York with a launch event that once again hammers home how rude is the health of the UK contemporary art scene. Our selection of work from Goldsmiths graduates has inspired students from York College, Leeds College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, all selected for their excellence. The work includes photography, installation, performance, painting, digital art: all of it has been harnessed and distilled into the beautiful, collectible format of poster art, all of it available to purchase as limited edition giclées. With thanks to 'York Cocoa House' and 'Fossgate Social' for providing chocolatey and cocktail-y treats, respectively. Extra footage will be included in soon to be launched TV channel 'Hello York'.
