Global Exchange is an international human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice since 1988. We are a 501 c3 registered non-profit. We’re changing the rules across the globe from a profit-centered global economy to thriving people-centered local economies; from the politics of greed to a living democracy that respects the rights of workers and nature; and from currency to community. Our holistic approach reaches thousands of members and supporters, through educating the U.S. public about root causes of injustice and the impacts of U.S. government policies and corporate practices. We inspire change by building people-to-people ties, engaging grassroots education for action and linking social and environmental movements. Global Exchange was founded over 25 years ago to promote human rights, justice and sustainability around the world. We envisioned building a robust U.S. movement capable of creating change from the grassroots, powered by people-to-people ties. To change the world, we started making change at home. Over the last 25-years, we have won victories big and small on behalf of workers, small farmers, the environment and vulnerable communities around the world. We helped build a thriving Fair Trade movement. We championed campaigns to stop and end wars, challenge corporate power and bring attention to the exploitation of the current global economy. We monitored elections in Colombia, Mexico, and in the U.S. We built the largest sustainability event (Green Festival) in the country from the ground up and trained young adults in green careers. We have organized social conscious travel around the globe on our Reality Tours. And we are still going strong! Learn more and join us at www.globalexchange.org

In May 2014, international human rights organization, Global Exchange presented three Human Rights Awards and the annual dinner. The People's Choice Award: The Cuban Five, Cuban intelligence agents arrested in the United States while infiltrating anti-Castro organizations openly plotting attacks against the Cuban people. Their trial, conviction, and subsequent treatment is best understood as a microcosm of U.S.-Cuba relations – and has been widely criticized. They were selected to receive the People's Choice Award through the annual online competition. This Award is the first they have received in the United States. International Human Rights Award: María Estela Barco Huerta is a prominent anti-GMO activist who has played a leading role in organizing Agro-Ecology Learning Exchanges in Chiapas, Mexico. Ms. Barco works diligently to safeguard the way of life and livelihoods of indigenous people, as well as create a working alternative to industrial agriculture. DESMI is a strong partner of IDEX - International Development Exchange - based in San Francisco and an ally of Global Exchange. Domestic Human Rights Award: The Award was presented by Walter Turner, of Global Exchange and accepted by Charlie Cobb, Freedom Schools visionary and Phillip Agnew from the Dream Defenders. Bernice Johnston Reagon, founder of Freedom Singers and cultural historian, was unable to attend but sent these words, which can be read here: globalexchange.org/blogs/peopletopeople/2014/05/13/remarks-by-bernice-johnson-reagon-on-the-occasion-of-receiving-the-domestic-human-rights-award/. Both Charlie and Phillip channeled the power of history in honoring the struggle for civil rights and demanded that while we commemorate this history, we must recognize that there is still work to be done.
