      • A Decade of Change: NYC as Global City (2004 – 2014)

        from Culturebot Added 100 0 0

From May 5 – June 9, 2014 critic, curator and cultural provocateur Andy Horwitz gave a series of five lectures on live performance at NYU. In this lecture, "A Decade of Change: NYC as Global City (2004 – 2014)", Andy examines the economic, cultural and structural transformation of NYC between 2004 - 2014, the implications of those changes for artists living and working in NYC and the opportunities it presents for strengthening regional cultural production. Drawing from his extensive body of critical writing on Culturebot.org, the findings of The Brooklyn Commune Project’s report on arts, economics and cultural production in the performing arts, and his years of experience as a curator, producer and artist advocate, over the course of five lectures Horwitz weaves disparate but interrelated topics together to offer a uniquely insightful perspective into the current state of performance and its possible futures. These lectures were made possible with support from the Tisch Initiative for Creative Research at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, (Dana Whitco, Director). Special thanks to Allyson Green, Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts; the Department of Dance, Cherylyn Lavagnino and Sean Curran, Co-Chairs. Special thanks also to William Moulton and Paul Galando, Tisch Dance.

Bonifacio Global City is the complete package and it makes no effort in hiding that fact. Offices, malls, supermarkets, restaurants, event venues, recreation and leisure areas, lined up along well-paved roads, can be reached in a few minutes from any point within the bustling district. Residential developments, despite being seemingly in the middle of a concrete jungle, offer peaceful living spaces to the Metro's most sophisticated residents. The Piazza del Duomo is Milan's central square in front of its majestic cathedral. If all the world's a stage, then this is one of the world's premiere venues. It is of course full of tourists using the cathedral as the perfect backdrop for holding on to that unforgettable moment when they posed in front of the Duomo. This is what we do as tourists. We appear in front of historical monuments that our tourist guide has described as 'must see'. Once the main job is done, we can relax, have some ice cream, coffee or a beer and do what is really fun: look at all the other tourists and the locals as they do more or less the same thing we do.

Another video in the series "Sidewalk Cafes" https://vimeo.com/channels/576721, dedicated to providing you with a glimpse of the people passing by as you sip your coffee. Get a sense of the people in a city you don't know, or haven't been to in a while. Are urban people becoming globalized, looking and behaving much the same regardless of what big city we are talking about? The answer is yes and no. Which is not particularly helpful. So see for yourself. Reuterstrasse is in Kreuzkölln, a region in the city of Berlin straddling the two districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. It is an up and coming neighborhood, once populated mainly by low-income folk, many of them Turkish. Kreuzkölln is now full of young people and and young families, many of them from outside Germany. In addition to German and Turkish, you hear English, French, Italian, Greek and other languages spoken. The area has a good energy and feels very alive.
