Out of Eden Learn (http://learn.outofedenwalk.com/) is a unique online learning community designed to accompany Paul Salopek’s Out of Eden Walk (http://www.outofedenwalk.com/). Through Out of Eden Learn, students from around the world can engage in Paul’s journey and all that it represents. They explore their own neighborhoods, investigate contemporary global issues, and reflect on how they as individuals fit into a broader geographical and historical context. In addition, they share their perspectives and interact with one another on an exciting digital platform that uses social media as a springboard for deep, meaningful learning. The goal is to ignite students’ interest in the wider world and support them to become more informed, thoughtful, and engaged “global citizens.” Out of Eden Learn is an initiative of Project Zero (http://www.pz.harvard.edu/), a research center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, in collaboration with Paul Salopek. • Story from Arunachal

              from Marta Kotlarska Added 143 0 0

STORY FROM ARUNACHAL is an educational film created by Maria Strzemieczna – Polish nurse and sociologist, who has been working as a part Polish Medical Mission Association on promotion of preventive health care in India and by Martushka Fromeast – photographer and founder of Click Academy, collaboratively with a group of children from Governmental Primary School in New Khimiyang, in Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh is one of the 29 states of India. Located in northeast India, it shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Myanmar in the east and China in the north. China claims the northern part of the state as a part of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Arunachal is a very diverse state, restricted from access by outsiders and inhabited by various tribes, speaking different languages. Many years of geographical and political isolation of the area allowed local population to preserve their tribal traditions and culture. At the same time political difficulties contributed to a slowdown in the development of the region, limiting access to education and health care. Nowadays people of Arunachal Pradesh are facing rapid changes in lifestyle, related to migrations and cultural influences from central and southern states of India. Those processes pose a threat to the local tribal traditions. Prepared in intensive collaboration with the local community from New Khimiyang the film raises issues of recent rapid changes in this region – risks and hopes that they bring for the local communities. It also underlines the importance of simple health interventions, such as hand-washing with soap, as an effective disease prevention method. Project was co-financed within the framework of the Polish aid – development cooperation program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, 2014. English, Polish and Hindi versions of the film are available for download and use on the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Poland licence. Some rights are reserved for Martushka Fromeast and Maria Strzemieczna. Permission is granted to any use of this film on a condition of including the above-mentioned information about the applicable license, the rights holders and the Polish Development Cooperation Program. The film STORY FROM ARUNACHAL is a part of a long-term collaborative storytelling project STORIES FROM HIMALAYAS http://www.storiesfromhimalayas.com/p/home.html

              • Digital Citizenship in Out of Eden Learn- Promoting Authentic and Respectful Dialogue

from Out of Eden Learn Added 13 0 0

A core element of the Out of Eden Learn (OOEL) experience is that young people are given the opportunity to share perspectives, stories, and slices of their everyday lives with young people from different places and cultures. As youth take up these opportunities, there are both great promises and risks. How can we as educators support online exchanges that are authentic, meaningful, and respectful? In this Google+ hangout, Carrie James and Chris Sloan discussed digital citizenship in the OOEL context. As part of this conversation, they introduced a toolkit for online dialogue designed to support positive dialogue in OOEL. They also discussed and invited feedback on a draft policy for responding to insensitive posts. Carrie James is a co-principal investigator of the Out of Eden Learn project, Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education. Chris Sloan is an English teacher and media adviser at Judge Memorial High School. He has helped to develop youthvoices.net since 2005. Chris is a teacher consultant with the National Writing Project and Wasatch Range Writing Project, a Google Certified Teacher, and an EPET PhD candidate at Michigan State University.
