Back in October, I was contacted by a professor from Columbia College about a project she wanted to do with that semester's journalism students. The project involved investigating a list of TIF (Tax Increment Financing) projects that the city had recently released. Once her students had finished investigating each of the TIF project sites, they were to be displayed on a searchable map to accompany an article they had been writing. My task was to build this searchable map and I did so using a Google labs service called Fusion Tables and the Google Maps API. Since then I've made several other maps using the same tools and found them to be very powerful and easy to use. My presentation will discuss how I came to use Fusion Tables and how they can help anyone easily display and map a set of data. About Derek I graduated from Washington University in St Louis with a BS in Computer Engineering and moved to Chicago right after graduation. Started working at Webitects after college and have been doing web development for the past 5 years. Recently, I started getting in to open data and eventually found the Open Government Chicago Meetup. Through that meetup I've done several open data projects outside of work, including the one I will present on.
