"Contraception is bad medicine." With this statement, Sr. Mary Diana, O.P., MD makes a poignant challenge to the established medical practice of "giving pills or performing surgery to stop a perfectly normal and healthy organ just because it's doing what it's supposed to do." Sister takes a look at the issue of contraception from a "purely medical and scientific perspective." In doing such, she contributes greatly to the mounting evidence that there is a better option for women than birth control.

"I have come that they may have life to the full." This is the good news, the "Gospel of Life". In becoming man, the Son of God, has secured the inviolable dignity of the human person. The discussion on "Humanae Vitae" and contraception must begin in the stable at Bethlehem for Jesus reveals to us the truth of who we are.

This year’s Gospel of Life Appeal message with Bishop Olmsted features an appeal by our Bishop to do all we can to protect and serve the lives of our most vulnerable, particularly our unborn brothers and sisters. It contains a short, true story from a mother who chose adoption for her child after becoming pregnant in rape then seeing a VirtueMedia television ad. It is very age appropriate for youth and non-graphic as well as inspiring. Funds collected from the Gospel of Life Appeal are distributed this way. • 1/3 stays at the parish for Respect Life outreach according to pastor’s priorities • 1/3 supports the ongoing VirtueMedia Gospel of Life ad campaign • 1/3 provides Respect Life education throughout the Diocese of Phoenix through the Marriage and Respect Life office

The Gospel of Life Appeal (formerly Respect Life Sunday) will take place in parishes throughout the Diocese of Phoenix the weekend of Oct. 1-2, 2011. 1. The name change emphasizes our responsibility at the domestic Church, parish and diocesan levels to evangelize with the Good News of the precious dignity of human beings at all stages of life and development. This is in keeping with the vision of John Paul II's 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae as well as the corresponding USCCB 1996 document Living the Gospel of Life. 2. To better encourage and assist parish efforts to be actively involved in promoting the Gospel of Life, the resulting funds of the collection will be distributed as follows beginning this October. a. 33% of the funds collected at the parish remain with the parish to fund its own Respect Life educational efforts at the discretion of the pastor. b. 34% of the funds continue to fund our cooperation with Virtue Media in the ongoing pro-life ads we are running in the state. c. 33% of the funds are retained by the Office of Marriage and Respect Life Parish Leadership Support to fund our Diocesan-level pro-life evangelistic and educational efforts. d. In sum, 33% of the funds generated remain with the parish, while 67% are sent to the Office of Marriage and Respect Life for the purposes mentioned in b and c. We are a Gospel of Life diocese, one and all. May the Holy Spirit breathe life into all our good efforts to end the culture of death and grow a culture of life! If you have questions, please contact Mike Phelan at mcphelan@diocesephoenix.org or (602) 354-2355.
