    • Spirit-Filled Music (Ephesians 5:18-19) John MacArthur

http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/90-377 Well, let's take the Word of God and open to Ephesians chapter 5. Ephesians chapter 5 verses 18 and 19 tell us this, "And do not get drunk with wine for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord." This is Spirit-filled music. Certainly we're all aware that music dominates our culture, aren't we? Rarely is anyone away from it. If you're in the car, music is playing. If you're at home, music is playing, on the radio, the television, stereos, CD players, MP3s, Ipods, etc. If you go into a store, music is playing. If you go into a restaurant, music is playing. You see people walking down the street, riding bicycles, jogging with ear plugs listening to music. Music is a powerful emotional stimulator....

http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/90-462 Now we have been looking for the last number of weeks on Sunday night at the Charismatic Movement from a biblical perspective. And while the questions that we have posed and answered have been many already, there are just a few things that need to be said, and they happen to be very foundational realities. I think when most people look at the Charismatic Movement, think about the Movement, they look at the phenomena that goes on. They talk about tongues, and they talk about miracles, and signs and wonders so-called, supposedly. People talk about the kind of behavior they see on television or experience in person if they’ve been to a Charismatic service or environment. But there are some underlying theological presuppositions that send the Movement on the wrong course from the very outset. The reason the behavior is out of control is because the foundations are non-existent. That is to say biblical foundations are non-existent. What substitutes for a biblical foundation are some serious errors that need to be addressed and you can’t understand the Movement is the way it is and features the behaviors that it has until you understand what has gone wrong at the very beginning....

          • Marks of Real Church Growth (Selected Scriptures) John MacArthur

http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/90-455 Well, it’s been a few weeks ago that we started a little series on how to recognize a real church, a true church. In all honesty, there are a lot of places that call themselves churches that really don’t deserve the name. There is a long list of locations called churches where, I guess you could say, the tares assemble, not the wheat. Maybe there are a few of weak wheat stalks mingled in, but it’s essentially a meeting together of the tares. Some of them are fairly successful and the successful assembly of the tares will eagerly market their skill in tare development. It can be very seductive to those who are motivated to see the church grow. And if you want to build one of those assemblies of tares, and see it develop, you could be a successful tare pastor by imbibing all of the strategies of the tare development folks....

http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/80-411 Of course the pinnacle of our expression of gratitude and worship is to come to the Lord's table which we will do in just a few moments. But in preparation for that, I want to draw your attention to a couple of passages in the Scripture. One of them comes at the very end of the gospel of Mark, the very last little paragraph in Mark's gospel marks a very, very significant event in the life of our Lord. And I want to look at that event as a heart and mind preparation for partaking in the communion together....

              • Love: The Greatest Thing (1 Corinthians 13:1-3) John MacArthur

                52:52

                from John MacArthur / Added

http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/90-402 Let's turn in the Word of God to the thirteenth chapter of Paul's letter to the Corinthians, 1 Corinthians chapter 13. As I mentioned this morning, over the next number of months I want to do some...some great chapters in the Scripture, some in the New and some in the Old Testament, some familiar portions of Scripture, some perhaps less familiar but significant chapters of the Bible and in a sense hit the mountain peaks as we take a look at God's glorious revelation. First Corinthians chapter 13 has been determined by some to be the deepest and the purest and the strongest aspect of spiritual life about which the Apostle Paul ever wrote. Some have dubbed it Paul's hymn of love. It is a glorious chapter. It is a beautiful chapter, a magnificent one, but more importantly, it is highly instructive, so much so as to be critical for all of us who are engaged in ministry. Let me read these thirteen verses to you and you follow as I read. "If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor and if I surrender my body to be burned but do not have love, it profits me nothing. Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant, it does not act unbecomingly, it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love."...
