Ornamentation—embellishment or beautification—has for hundreds of years been more than simply an afterthought or an augmentation to the things we create. We possess a natural need to express ourselves through tailoring and beautifying nearly everything that surrounds us, and we’ve been continuing this tradition throughout human history. This practice of ornamentation has brought more than mere decoration. Rather than simply a source of visual pleasure, it exists as part and parcel of the objects, structures, and concepts we deem most important. My thesis explores my belief that given the tools that we have today, this concept is one that can be pushed even further, specifically in the realm of graphic design. Given the evolution of the relevant technology, what has traditionally been a field limited to two-dimensional printing processes and representation now has the potential to be realized in three and four dimensions -- physical space and time. My thesis explores deconstructing the historical disciplines and philosophies behind ornamentation, and using such a foundation of understanding to create and perhaps even re-invent the concept of the ornamental artifact in graphic design, utilizing contemporary, technology-based design methods.

This my book animation of 'Jack the Ripper'. Some shots are looking a bit blurry so I added some noise and grain to add to it. I also know some shots were bit rushed.

This 5-film sequence was created in order to consider unique and inventive ways in which to overcome the boundary of distance in order to keep in touch with loved ones. Throughout, we visit several circumstances that show individuals maintaining relationships and friendships by video calling, sending letters, playing games, sharing hobbies and writing poetry, with these people often being aided by the use of modern technology in order to share these moments. With thanks to actors: Meg Harrington, Ben Fenn, Beth Quaife, Dai Thomas, and Sam Stedman. Featuring an original score created by Georgie Biggin.
