1. The Great Blue Heron (HD)

    from Mark Farag Added 2,030 32 11

For the past few months I've been busy recording several hours worth of various nature scenery for a short nature film that I'm working on. As I was working on that project I came across this Great Blue Heron at my local park and decided to piece together a quick 1 minute edit of just him/her. Filmed with a Canon HV30. 24p. Background sound of ocean waves recorded with Zoom H4n. www.TheVoicelessSongbird.com

      • 2015-04 A View from a Blind

        from Tara Tanaka Added 519 18 10

After two weeks of rain, we had four days of sunshine, and I spent the first and last three hours of each of those days in my backyard blind, videoing the many birds other wildlife that are now calling the swamp home. It's very hard for me to leave the house right now, as there is always something exciting going on right outside the window. In order to give a better perspective, I used a 105mm lens on a second camera, and had it running much of the time I was filming with my digiscoping system. The Wood Ducks are so wary, that I have to keep a cover over my scope so they don't see my hand focusing and making camera adjustments, and I have to keep my head down behind the camera at all times. When its time to leave the blind, I call my husband on my cell phone and he comes out of the house, which scares the ducks away, and then I come out of the blind. I don't want to scare them, but I also don't want them to start thinking that it's safe to be around a blind with someone in it. Everything was shot in 4K. One system was a GH4 + 20mm/1.7 + Digidapter + Swarovski STX85; the 2nd system was a GH4 + 105mm. Everything was shot using manual focus.

        • D River Heron

          from Ron Rosebrook Added 103 8 8

The D River in Lincoln City, Oregon is claimed to be the world's shortest river. It is the outlet for Devil's Lake into the Pacific Ocean. This video follows the Grate Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) almost the entire length of the river. Just before the river passes under U.S.Highway 101 the heron caught a fish from underneath a stump. My wife and I actually came down the access road by mistake. I saw Canadian Geese swimming and while I was filming them this heron came by me.

            • Great Blue Heron Early Spring Rookery

              from Nature in HD Added

Even before the snow has completely left, the Great Blue Herons arrive in the rookeries. The first males to arrive get the prime, strongest nest sites within the rookery. These same nests may be used year after year, or new ones built. They defend their territory from other males, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the females. Females are greeted with elaborate displays and calls from the males. (You can hear the soft “Whoo hoo hoo” call on the first clip in the video) The males often present branches to the female to start the nesting process. Once paired a clutch of 2 to 6 eggs will be laid and 1 or 2 broods will be raised each spring by the duo. from PapaJohn Added 32 2 3

It's been an easy winter so far and we've done our daily 3 mile walk all but once. Yesterday was the biggest challenge yet and we made it, the first to have walked on the new snow for most of the path. It was still snowing lightly and critters were fewer in number. Where we usually see about 20 deer there were none in sight. A fly-over by a handful of canadian geese and our solitary great blue heron coming in toward the end were all that accented my video of the day. Today the snow is almost twice as deep..... we'll see.
