This video shows the male Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) conducing their impressive courtship display on a Montana lek. Greater Sage-grouse are among only a handful of animals that use a lek to determine breeding success. A lek is a central courtship arena that puts the males of a species to the test by forcing them all to display in one location and compete for the mating rights to the female onlookers. Leks are used by animals such as some bats to antelope. Photo, video and editing by Ronan Donovan www.ronandonovan.com I wasn't able to capture any quality audio of the male's display sounds, so I borrowed the audio from Gail Patricelli, of U.S. David. Gail studies animal communication, mostly related to sounds.
