Fall 2011 Battle Royale in Gridworld with my AP Computer Science students. Thanks to Michael Lew at Loyola HS in Los Angeles for inspiration. Each student wrote a "Critter" and five instances of this Critter were placed on the grid. Students formed groups of four, so each team had a total of 20 Critters. The world was also populated by a random set of basic Critters, Bugs, and Rocks. Then they could do battle according to a set of rules described here: https://sites.google.com/a/siprep.org/apcomp/home/gridworldbattleroyale The text box at the right keeps track of how many instances of each Critter remain. As Critters drop out (devoured by opposing teammates), they disappear from this box. Only the survivors remain. Since the grid was populated at random, several competitions are shown -- the outcome seems to vary strongly based on initial (random) placement of Critters. Students came up with some very cool strategies. The "Elements", for instance, create row after row of rocks that crowd the opposing teams down to the bottom. The initial frames of the video show all the different student Critter names & the teams of four they formed within the BlueJ IDE. Thanks to all for participating!!

I wrote a simple extension to the Bug class that gets "shy" when around other Bugs. Aimed at helping kids through Part III of the GridWorld Case Study.
