In January 2008, Grimshaw was commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York to provide a design solution to a long-term subway flooding problem. Grimshaw was invited with two other architects to participate in a day long design charrette which entailed providing ideas and potential solutions. This resulted in Grimshaw Industrial Design being awarded the Manhattan component of the project. Grimshaw Industrial Design provided a solution incorporating bicycle racks and benches with the intent to maximise transparency with minimal impact on New York’s busy sidewalks. The design was engineered to be robust and to withstand significant vehicle loads. The furniture components are secured with tamper proof fixings and are fabricated from a higher grade of stainless steel, meeting NYCT durability standards and minimising ongoing maintenance. The flood mitigating aspect of the design is a continuous welded galvanised frame embedded into the sidewalk allowing for an up-stand. Standard sized MTA grates as well as custom versions were fabricated and galvanised for the venting component of the design.
