Firefighters were mopping up a series of lightning-caused fires near the wind turbines Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012. The two largest ones there were estimated at 11 acres and 5 acres. Thunderstorms passed through the area early Saturday morning touching off more than a dozen fires in eastern Shasta County. The 90-acre Fork-Bagley Fire was burning seven miles west of Big Bend. The largest was the Ponderosa Fire that started near Manton. Sunday morning's Cal Fire report listed the fire at 7,000 acres and threatening 3,500 residences. Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko declared a state of emergency Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Some 400 homes have been contacted for evacuation, but that number is expected to grow to 700 by this afternoon. An evacuation center for the Ponderosa Fire was moved from Junction School in Palo Cedro to Big League Dreams in Redding. Big League Dreams is located at 20155 Viking Way, off of Old Oregon Trail.
