This 80gram hoglets nest was disturbed by a dog. The owner quickly checked to make sure that non of the hoglets were injured and then kept a distant watch in case mum abandoned. She did abandon the nest taking this hoglets two siblings away one at a time. She did not however return for Lucie. Seeing this the finder contacted us straight away and Lucie is now being hand raised here.

This is the story of a hedgehog now named Oliver and his series of unfortunate events. Firstly Oliver fell into a vertical sided gutter which meant that he was trapped for some time. Secondly rather than being found by a kindly person who called for help straight away, Oliver was found by a group of children who chased him, threw stones and cans at him and poured fizzy pop over him.

This is one of the litter of six hoglets admitted here at Willows Hedgehog Rescue a couple of days ago. As detailed in the previous video they had been in trouble for some days and came in covered in fly strike (eggs) and with some live maggots. We cleaned off all the fly strike and all of the maggots that we could find. The issue here is that maggots make their way into an animal through wounds or opening such as the ears or bottom where of course they cannot be seen. This is exactly what has happened to this hoglet from the litter and the maggot have now caused an open wound (from the inside of the hoglet) on its back. There is no choice but to put this hoglet to sleep. The reality is if these hoglets had have been brought in a few days earlier when first spotted this hoglet would not now be off to be euthanized. Please watch the video and take the message away with you....

This litter of six has been admitted after being orphaned for several days. They were admitted covered in fly strike and maggots and wouldn't have lasted much longer. This video contains advice on what to do if you think you have found a hedgehog nest where mum is no longer around. Please do not disturb the nest and contact a rescue immediately.
