                  • Higher Education (2013)

                    from Oliver Salk / Added

Higher Education began when two students at a New England boarding school, both committed to regular high school classes and extracurriculars, set an ambitions goal for themselves: by the end of their senior year they would write, direct, act in, and produce a feature length film. The production of the film would be shot at their own prep school; the plot of the film would center on life at boarding school; the film would be made by boarding school students. The idea and script came next: Higher Education was born. With a small crew and student cast assembled, director Oliver Salk and writer Tommy Robertshaw immediately began production in the fall semester of 2012. The crew was able to rent professional equipment thanks to the generosity of countless individuals who contributed a total of more than $16,000 to the film's Kickstarter. Higher Education became more than just an afterschool project; it completely encompassed the lives of all involved. If members of the cast and crew weren’t in school studying or at sports, they were shooting in dorm rooms, gathering props, or holding discussions in Salk's dorm room/editing suite/production office. On behalf of the entire cast and crew of Higher Education, we hope that you enjoy the film.

Why don’t design students coming out of school know about responsive design or creating mobile apps? Why are our self-taught hackers and C.S. grads having a tough time keeping up with the pace of technology innovation? It’s not that schools or professional development programs are slow to adapt; it’s more complicated than that. But our tendency to focus on skills alone just isn’t sustainable. Instead, we need to start investing in the ways we create designers and fuel their growth.
