Just outside of Yosemite in Bass Lake, CA, lies High Sierra, a study abroad campus for Azusa Pacific University students that emphasizes communal living, a focus on the liberal arts, outdoor experience, and spiritual development. Each semester, around 40 students come up to Bass Lake to discover the opportunities that High Sierra has to offer them. As part of the curriculum for an advanced film production course at APU, as well as for promotional purposes for the High Sierra semester, this documentary was produced to explore some of the major tenants of the High Sierra program and the stories of the students and staff who have been impacted by their experiences in Bass Lake. This is the final chapter of the story from 2011 that featured an incredible ski mountaineering journey into the heart of the High Sierra in search of possible first descents. Featuring pro ski legend Glen Plake and IFMGA ski and mountain guide Howie Schwartz of Sierra Mountain Guides. The happy end went sour when the day after this adventure ended a friend was killed in an avalanche on a nearby mountain. Part 1 is meant to be educational on trip planning. Part 2 features a 5000 foot ski descent down Devil's Crags to Devil's Washbowl in epic snow conditions. Part 3 of the series here was premiered in January 2014, presented by Howie at an avalanche awareness gala hosted by Community Skis in Mammoth Lakes, CA and with Mr. Plake in attendance. Part 3 is dedicated to the late Kip Garre and his partner Alison Kreutzen who died in an avalanche on Split Mountain, only 6 horizontal miles from where we finished our tour and 1 day later.
