John Leach, Jr., 24, of Fall River Mills sustained major injuries Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, when the big rig he was driving rolled on Highway 299 near the vista point below Hatchet summit. Leach was driving east about 9:47 a.m. and hauling a trailer full of wood chips when he allowed the vehicle to drift to the right shoulder, striking a guardrail and overturning. A vehicle inspection was performed at the scene by CHP officers to determine if a mechanical failure or improper maintenance may have contributed to the collision. Two vehicles collided head-on July 24, 2009, about 3:52 p.m. on Highway 299 about one mile east of the intersection of Highways 299 and 89. A 17-year-old Burney driver in a white vehicle traveling east decided to place the vehicle in neutral in an effort to coast down a hill and conserve fuel. The automatic transmission was instead placed in reverse, causing the rear wheels to skid. The driver lost control, skidded onto the right shoulder, over-corrected and steered into the westbound lane where it struck a 52-year-old Arcata driver and her 14-year-old male passenger. All three persons were wearing seatbelts and treated for minor injuries at Mayers Memorial Hospital.
