      • Bruce G. Carruthers, Emmanuel Didier, Jahnavi Phalkey, Theodore M. Porter – Governance and Numbers: Credit, Crime and Growth

        01:27:32

        from Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin Added

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On February 19th Bruce G. Carruthers, Emmanuel Didier, Jahnavi Phalkey and Theodore M. Porter – current Fellows of the Wissenschaftskolleg and members of the focus group "Quantification" – examined the creation and use of numerical information in three different contexts in order to appreciate their complexity and significance. Starting in the 19th-century United States, credit ratings have been used to evaluate debtors and allocate credit. Measured productivity was essential to state-formation in 20th-century India. In contemporary France, policing has been transformed by the adoption of performance measures. These diverse cases will provide points of departure to explore contemporary trust in, and the power of, numbers. Bruce G. is John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor at Northwestern University. Emmanuel Didier is Research Fellow at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique / Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Jahnavi Phalkey teaches history of science and technology at the King's India Institute, King's College London. Introduction of the talk by Theodore M. Porter, Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. Lecture held at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, 19 Febuary 2014 Camera and Editing: Anna Konik
