          • Petra - In the City of Mysteries

            03:20

            from Joerg Niggli / Added

The ancient city of «Petra» is a place full of mysteries. Little is known about this symbol of Jordan and now the country's most visited tourist attraction. It was established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans. It's called «Petra» (meaning: stone) today, but the original name of the city is not known. The site remained unknown until 1812, when it was introduced to the Europeans by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. About the shooting: «Petra - In the City of Mysteries» is after «Amman - City in Motion» (https://vimeo.com/46847325) and «Wadi Rum - A Majestic Landscape» (https://vimeo.com/47899470) my third time lapse movies about different sites in Jordan shot and edited for the Jordan Tourism Boaord (www.visitjordan.com). Shooting took place during 3 days in July 2012. Equipment used for the «Petra» video: Canon 7D, Canon G12 and Panasonic GH2, a set of lenses, a GoPro 2 and two tripods. Rendered and edited in After Effects, Motion and Final Cut Pro X. Blur effects all added in post (no tilt-shift lenses). Music: «Rise of an Empire» of Chris Haigh, with a license of premiumbeat.com

One of Winnebago County's earliest courthouses was nearly completed when on May 11, 1877, disaster struck. The roof caved in killing 9 workers and injuring several others. Work soon resumed and the courthouse was dedicated just a year later. "Charity", along with three other statues, "Justice", "Mercy", and "Moses the Law Giver" stood four stories high on each corner of the building for 90 years. Midway Village Museum Curator of Education Mark Herman says, "They took her down when they had to remodel the top of the courthouse it was starting to deteriorate" The hand carved sandstone statues were created specifically for the courthouse to make a statement. Herman says, "All the local counties around here have a courthouse of some kind, but they're all completely different. It just says a lot about the personality of the people who were in government at that time." It's not clear what happened to the other three statues. There are rumors one or more may be privately owned in the Rockford area.
